News for Sunday morning

Here's a story that kinda borders on racism -- or at least anti-Americanism...
I doubt it will get the same kind of coverage, though, as a lot of similar stories...
...even though this decision by the Portugese professional leagues is --
as they readily admit...

".. clear violation of the European Community rules"

Only ONE day after the Portugese professional league announced their ALL-League Awards -- they announce a NEW restrictive policy limiting the number of import players on squads.

So why is this important??

Well - just connect the dots....

They announce the ALL-League Awards--and if you happen to notice, almost all the spots on every ALL-League team went to non-Portugese players -- mainly Americans (including ex-Wichita State Shocker Sean Ogirri)!!

Then the VERY next day they announce this...

"In a meeting held yesterday, in Lisbon, ...teams decided the number of foreign players that can be registered next season.....to avoid a big number of foreign players in the leagues.

So, the deal between teams will accept the inscription of 4 non-Portuguese players in LPB teams (their top league) and 2 non-Portuguese players in Proliga (their 2nd tier league). This agreement is clear violation of the European Community rules, even if unwritten. But Portuguese basketball has decided this way"

Speaking of Portugese -- in another nation where they speak Portugese, Brazil, comes some news that is remotely Bradley related...

Oscar Schmidt --
Many know who Oscar Schmidt is -- he's the Brazilian basketball great who led his Brazilian teams to victory over American teams - specifically in the 1987 Pan American Games and he also starred in the 1988 Olympics (the games were lost to the Russians with Hersey Hawkins) -- and Oscar was a friend and frequent teammate of Bradley great Marcel De Souza.

In those 1988 Olympics -- Oscar scored a total of 338 points for a 42.3 points per game average.

Oscar is currently in the news having been just recently diagnosed with a serious illness--
they say the tumor is benign and that the 53 year old star will likely recover...

Even though he never played in the NBA -- here's just how prolific of a scorer Oscar was...
In his professional basketball career that spanned 20 years -- he scored an amazing 49,702 points --
..consider that the top career scorer of ALL TIME in the NBA - Kareem Abdul Jabbar - has 38,387 points..

In one of the more ironic news items of the past week -- one of the new, incoming recruits at Missouri -- is a junior college kid named Quantel Denson --

http://hutchnews.com/Latestlocalnews/HCC-basketball-player-arrested-in-connection-with-burglary

But here are the various levels of irony in this story --

-- first this kid gets the tremendous opportunity to play D-I ball at the highest level -- in the Big 12 and he quite possibly blows it all away by committing a really stupid crime.

-- second -- of all the crimes to commit -- he broke into HIS OWN junior college coach's room and stole things from - HIS OWN COACH!!

-- then perhaps the highest level of irony is that Mizzou just hired a brand new head coach -- with each of the last few head coaches (Stewart, Quin Snyder, Anderson) being plagued by players with criminal tendencies, robberies, drug arrests, bar fights, etc...
Then before this new coach Frank Haith even gets to see his players on campus or coach a game or a practice -- his prized 2012 recruit gets arrested for a FELONY -- aggravated burglary!!
BUT the new Mizzou coach still hasn't made a comment nor said if he's still going to covet the kid's talent enough to overlook the crime and take the kid anyway --

The Kansas Jayhawks fans -- whose players have been pretty significant thugs and criminals themselves over the years - are having a field day with this one at the expense of Mizzou.

Lastly -- someone mentioned a thread on some other really unpopulated board that mentions the long time head of the B-Club stepping down.
Doesn't surprise me...and another thing that doesn't surprise me is that when the guy states the reason -- the whole thread immediately turns into a shoot the messenger attack.
Their unbreakable rule: You can viciously attack other posters, other people, people you do not know and people who are far better character than you'll ever be, and you can even attack the coach and the players, but you da**ed well better NEVER hint at criticism of the sacred institution of the PJS!
