What MVC Refs Get Paid

The subject comes up once in a while as to how much officials get paid....and how much the top refs make for the games they work...

As most know, the amounts paid depend on several factors, the main one is the level at which the game is being played...
What I mean is that a 5-6th grade level game generally pays less to officiate than a high school game....etc..

Well I have personally organized and arranged payment for games/refs at the elementary, HS, and junior high level...so I have some knowledge...
BUT over the weekend I ran into a friend who is a pharmaceutical sales rep by day but a very top official in evenings as a 2nd job.
I know some of you would know his name, but I learned a lot about how much refs and umps get paid during our conversation.
This friend only works games that aren't too far outside of Peoria because of family and job, but he did have a good knowledge of the amount the refs get paid at various levels., so I would vouch for this coming from a pretty good and reputable source.

From my own knowledge..
the junior high baseball and basketball umps & refs get around $40-60 per game. Some schools will pay more for the better refs but that's true for all levels, and tourney games pay more...up to even $100.

High school refs for basketball can get $40-60 for summer games, but regular season pretty consistently will pay more, on up to over $100 per game.

This particular friend has actually done college games, so he knew what they pay...

He has done ICC baseball and basketball and the rate is $90 for a single baseball game, and a bit more for basketball...and at least double that for a DH or back to back basketball games like when they do women's games followed by the men's game...but that isn't too often.

Then he said he has done some MVC women's games but never an MVC men's basketball game, although he knows the amounts paid...
He has done some MVC baseball.
All pay will also include (separately) the customary travel reimbursement as well.

for regular MVC baseball games, $150 to $175/gm and you can get $500+ for a 3-game weekend series because the travel is minimized.

For MVC basketball they get way, way more...
$800 to $1200/gm, and even up to $1500 in order to land the top (name) refs for high profile games that include the contenders, or that are on TV.

The Big Ten routinely pays $1500 for a single basketball game, and higher for some....and of course the tournament games always pay better....thus the big games like in the Big Ten, preferentially get the name-refs the ones we see a lot on TV because they are well liked, know the rules, and make good calls.
I know some of our readers and posters have done some reffing, so if anyone has more to add, I would like to know....just PM me on BradleyFans.

I have some semi-official word that the delay in the schedules for all the MVC teams is not the fault of the MVC -- it is due to scheduling issues and delays by the network that plans to televise some of the games....more later ;)
I won't go into great detail (maybe will "privately") but suffice to say it might not even get done this week!

University of Iowa's all time leading scorer, and ex-NBA'er Roy Marble is in a little trouble..
He was just "hired a month ago as the new youth leadership program director for the Mayor's Youth Empowerment Program". Being the head of this program means you need to be an admirable leader and be in the headlines with "issues".

Marble "was arrested in Cedar County on Monday and charged with driving while barred - habitual offender, driving with a denied or revoked license, distribution of ephedrine and possession of drug paraphernalia."

University of Michigan begins its investigation of itself after numerous players and ex-players have come forward detailing identical stories of numerous NCAA violations going on.
You have put a fair amount of stock into complaints that come from the active players themselves!!!!
I wonder if this will go as quickly as the 5-6 year saga of the Reggie Bush violations at USC and the investigation (actually non-investigation) going on there?
God-forbid that this would have been SEMO!!

Steve Nash Having a Little Fun in China

Here's an interesting story that isn't making headlines in the US.

NBA All Star Steve Nash is in China "for a week with a handful of NBA players to appear on the finale of a Chinese basketball reality show and for a coaching clinic at a rural school where NBA players are helping build a new basketball court."

Nash put on a disguise and tried to join a pickup basketball game in China but his identity was recognized by his own Chinese fans...

Here's a Rivals writer who says Billy Gillispie's latest actions may have cost him a coaching job!
"Billy Gillispie probably cost himself a job"

Oh - really??? his other DUI arrests and indiscretions didn't cost him the offer to coach at Kentucky, which was perhaps the top open coaching job in the nation!
And Indiana hiring Kelvin Sampson a couple years ago proves that anyone can get hired if there's hope he'll recruit 5-Star players and maybe win games.

The Hoopsreport.com continues with some pretty surprising preseason predictions..
http://www.thehoopsreport.com/articles.aspx

the latest silliness is they have Indiana at #33. Their predicted starting lineup will be 2 freshman and 2 sophs and one other complete newcomer.
Then this......"The best player to compare Muniru to is Dwight Howard. Muniru is just that ripped"
Muniru...by the way, has spent 6 years in high school and is 7-ft tall and at least 3-4 years older than the opponents he has faced in high school, and he still averaged only 5-10 ppg and about the same rebounds. Some games he was scoreless.
I don't think Dwight Howard had any such problem even tho he played high school ball when he was actually 16 and 17 years old, not 22 or 23.

One more note on NCAA discipline....
a D-II in Hawaii, BYU-Hawaii got nailed with 3 years of probation and other penalties for stuff that was pretty minor.
Seriously, a complex issue caused a kid to be ineligible and get this...
He failed to declare a major fast enough (the NCAA requires it be done before the kid's 3rd year).

Wow-- keep in mind, that this is essentially as severe as the penalty the NCAA gave Indiana for all the cheating that went on under Sampson.

Now that BU is back from Brazil - catching up on recruiting

Bradley lost a little ground in recruiting because of all the extra practices and the trip to Brazil. Not that anyone would give all that up, as it was really a tremendous experience, but it cannot be denied, that it put BU nearly a month behind in regards to recuiting, contacting prospective future Braves, and hosting campus visits.

But BU is back on track, and I have heard some really great things. BU has some great kids interested, and has already hosted a couple of them on campus. Of course names won't be mentioned, but one of them is rated Top 100 nationally by one of the recruiting services!!

The ongoing construction and the incredibly beautiful facilities that are already built are beginning to have a payoff effect. The kids that come onto campus and tour the site, especially the Markin Center, are blown away. And when they realize that ALL the facilities will be done by the time they might come to BU, then the days of losing recruits because of lack of facilities are now gone.
Kudos to the staff.........as they really deserved time off and a nice long rest after the long Brazil trip that covered 24 hours on planes, a dozen more hours waiting in airports, 8-10 hours in cars and buses, and a few hours hiking in mountains and riding trams....not to mention the practice sessions and five very tough games!
But...as some already know, the coaching staff was barely back in Peoria before they headed out of town, and started working again.
Just look at the BU rosters and realize that our staff had to beat the bushes in Texas, Louisiana, Alaska, California, Georgia, Virginia, Nevada, etc., as well as Illinois!

Great work, and keep it up, the dividends are paying off. Can't wait for the 2009-2010 season to begin!

Here's an oddity...Matt Roth has given up his uniform number to an incoming freshman.
Here's a pic from last year...one that shows his jersey number...

Interesting...

Matt Roth wore #2 last year for Indiana

This year he is going to be #30, as he gave up his #2 to highly rated incoming freshman Christian Watford.

The only other player to give up his uniform number was walk on Daniel Moore, who gave up his n umber (#3) for incoming freshman Maurice Creek, even though Creek isn't even yet cleared by the NCAA and might not be.

I have developed a little interest in the FIBA America Tournament and the play of the Brazilian team. As we saw while BU was down in Brazil, they play a fairly high level of play and their top pro teams would easily be equal competition for the majority of D-I American teams.
However, their TOP professional players have now grown into a formidable team.
Although Brazil had previously been ranked #18 among the men's team in thwe world:
http://www.fiba.com/pages/eng/fc/even/rank/p/rankMen.html

..it is now quite obvious that they are greatly better than 18th...as they just got done knocking off the Argentinians, who are ranked #1, even ahead of the US squad....
Brazil at 3-0 is now assured of moving to the next round, while perennial powerhouse Argentina is about to be eliminated.

Here's a bummer....Christopher Niemann, a 6-11 kid from Germany, who had already served the 1-full-year penalty for playing ball in Europe on teams that had pros - even though he was an amateur - has now torn his ACL, will require surgery, and will be out for this entire season as well.

How much money does each D-I school spend on basketball?
Well, here's a list although I have no idea how accurate as this data cannot be easy to get, especially from the private schools, so I would think some is guesswork.
http://www.bbstate.com/info/schools-hoopsbudget

Bradley is ranked 83rd ($2.9 mil), ahead of schools like Saint Louis, DePaul, and Gonzaga....so I really have my doubts.
Creighton (64) and Wichita (76) are the only two MVC schools listed above BU.
ISU is listed at #171 - 9th highest in the Valley and barely above Indiana State for last in the Valley, so again, I really have my doubts.
FGCU at #331, shows where KK's starting grounds are...

Some NCAA and International Items

Brazil wins two more games at the FIBA Americas Championship in San Juan, PR.
Brazil is on a roll, and the recent losses by Argentina (85-69 loss to Venezuela) means that the Brazilians are clearly the 2nd best team in all of North & South America now, behind the US.

Oddly, Argentina based on some earlier successes, actually sits atop the FIBA world rankings at #1...ahead of even the US.
But clearly at this present time Brazil (ranked 18th by FIBA) is the better team.
The rankings should be updated after this tournament.

Here is an interesting article about how Africans commonly falsify their age for athletic purposes.

In fact, in some countries, it is not only common, it is widely known to be the routine way things are done. This story is mostly about soccer players who cheat by as much as 10 to even 15 years about their age.

Here is another article proving the same thing, and how the government is even involved in helping the players hide and falsify their ages, and this article is only available in the google cache since it has since been taken off the original web site in Nigeria, likely by the government people who don't want this stuff talked about.

Thus is it any wonder that Africans like these, who look at least 25 and maybe even 30 years old, are claiming to be high schoolers...
John Riek at Mississippi State (claims to be 19 years old)
Festus Ezeli (claims to be 19)
Beas Hamga (claimed to be 18)
Mac Koshwal (claimed to be only 19)
Bawa Muniru was supposedly only 17 at the time of this picture
Wichita State recruit Ehimen Orupke - the one on the right in this pic (claims to be 19)
-
-
-
Speaking of Ehimen Orupke, we have a discussion going on BradleyFans...and it details a whole lot of CHEATING going on at the junior college where Orupke is.
Three Rivers CC was audited and many, many irregularities and illegal payments to players were uncovered.
This hasn't been reported very widely, outside of Missouri, but the NJCAA came down immediately and hard on Three Rivers, and docked them SIX scholarships for each of the next two seasons.
Wow-- is this actually refreshing and great to see!!
no five year lag and non-investigation...no slap of probation only for cheaters...
the NJCAA really means business and immediately slammed TRCC HARD!
Nice to see....I sure hope someone at the NCAA would notcie and maybe apply some of the same action to USC, UConn, etc...but dig me up in another century if that actually ever happens!

Yet another example of Bob Huggins' discipline....or better yet.....non-existent discipline.
Another in the long, long, long line of Huggins players with multiple arrests, actually was given a meaningless mid-summer "suspension"...but of course as soon as school is now in and the NCAA allows the players to begin practicing....
then Huggins immediately "reinstates" Joe Mazzulla.
Mazzulla has had multiple arrests for fighting, disorderly conduct, fighting with police, physically attacking a female roommate, and underage drinking.
seriously, how many coaches would even allow such a thug to remain on the team??
But in the end, Mazzulla won't miss a single practice or a single minute of a single game due to any suspension, so I guess you have to wonder what's the use of an off season suspension anyway?
But then, just what does anyone actually expect coming from huggy-ville.
It's been detailed again and again, that countless of his recruits, his players, and his ex-players are thugs, criminals, repeat criminals, druggies, and thugs.

Lots of Valley Tidbits in the News

Wichita writer Paul Suellentrop wrote the Valley section for the upcoming Athlon Preseason College Basketball Preview.
He reveals in his Wichita Eagle blog a little about how he ranked the teams in his preseason Valley Preview...

He states that he has Northern Iowa ranked #1, followed by Creighton then ISU.
He also notes that he slotted SIU for finishing 5th, but then leaves us hanging by saying...
"Wichita State, Bradley and SIU seem to be fighting for the fourth spot (behind Northern Iowa, Creighton and Illinois State)"

so did he put BU 4th or Wichita, he doesn't really say and makes us wait 'til September to see the Athlon preview issue.

-

Illinois State's Redbird beat writer, Jim Benson, blogs about ISU's schedule again...
and he comments again on the extreme weakness of the Redbirds' non-conference schedule.
Recall, there were those who promised after last year's ridiculously soft non-conference schedule, that 2009-2010 would be different and would surprise people with how tough the slate would be.
Well, people are indeed surprised.....they are surprised ISU has scheduled so poorly AGAIN that it has now set itself up for the same potential agonizing situation...that they might go undefeated in the preconference games, then have a fine year in the Valley, win 25 games but still get scoffed at by the NCAA selection committee.
Watch out....it's gonna happen again and it is astounding that the ISU people apparently don't see that and are repeating the same mistake.

Here's what Benson says...
"I have heard from Redbird fans already who are crying for ISU to play some marquee teams in the nonconference. Every other Valley team will play at least one opponent from a BCS football conference.
ISU and other Valley schools are never going to get home-and-home series with BCS teams. Those days are gone. ISU’s philosophy is not to play anyone for a “guarantee” game on the road without that team coming back to Redbird Arena.
The MVC/Mountain West Challenge gives the Redbirds a great opportunity to get a quality team to Redbird Arena every other year. That’s a plus. Also, Niagara has a bunch of athletes who started their careers in the Big East and will be no pushover, as ISU found out last season.
I would urge ISU coach Tim Jankovich to get in an exempt tournament every year that allows the Redbirds an opportunity to play big schools on a neutral court. Creighton is doing it this year in Orlando, while Bradley is going to Vegas in the same setup. Having three games at home for Thanksgiving break in an exempt tourney is hurting the Redbirds’ schedule.

The sad reality is that, unless a team wins the Valley regular-season title outright and doesn’t embarrass itself in the Valley tourney, it won’t have a chance for an NCAA at-large bid."
http://www.pantagraph.com/app/blogs/main/?p=4156

But it's the reader comments at the end of that Benson column that are priceless...
"Mr. Benson any chance you can interview Coach Jankovich and ask him about the schedule? 2 years in a row, this is just terrible."

"Here is the problem – there are only a select few people who have a “press pass” and thus the opportunity to interview Jank on his yet-again, atrocious job scheduling. I don’t see WJBC doing it, so could you PLEASE ask him how for the third straight year, he has put together a schedule that embarrasses us alum?"

"State’s schedule continues to be a sore spot"

Here's an odd story....
University of Nebraska presently has 14 basketball players on scholarship. The NCAA allows only 13, but the Huskers even had to cut one player off scholarship and turn him into their "student assistant coach" just to get down to 14, as they were previously at 15!
Nebraska kept Chris Balham on scholarship under a "medical hardship waiver" somewhat like ISU did a couple years ago with Mike Vandello.

But they still need to make some kind of move to get down to 13 scholarship players of hope they can get yet another waiver from NCAA.

So how did this happen? Well, a kid they were recruiting from Germany finally and somewhat unexpectedly got cleared by the NCAA...
"Christian Standhardinger, a November recruit, finally got the OK from the NCAA Clearinghouse on Friday — 279 days after he signed his letter of intent.
Sadler, without giving details, said the scholarship overage likely will be resolved"
...and they are hoping NCAA will aloow them to keep all 14 players on scholarship!!

BUT -- Standhardinger won't be able to play right away...
"Like other recent German club players, the 6-foot-8 wing is subject to a one-year NCAA penalty for playing on a team that paid some members, even though he earned nothing more than allowed expenses.
Now, Sadler said, Standhardinger seems determined to come to Nebraska even if he has to sit a year." (the Lucca Staiger penalty)

http://www.omaha.com/article/20090824/SPORTS01/708249833

By the way...it has been mentioned that upcoming changes in the NCAA rules might eliminate this penalty against foreign lpayers who have played on teams with others who are pros,
but it may not help those who are enrolling this year.
http://bradleyfans.com/vb/showthread.php?t=12737

"Nebraska hopes that NCAA legislation set for a vote in August 2010 that would lift the penalty from such players — labeled “vicarious professionals'' — might be applied to those enrolling for the coming season. No timetable has been set for a possible ruling."

But the guy who wrote the article doesn't appear to know what he's talking about.

"I recently mused with Chris Reynolds about these
questions. Now an assistant athletic director at
Western Michigan University, he knows the big time
having played basketball at Indiana for one of the
game's most legendary coaches...."

but this is really weird....Chris Reynolds started in athletic administration at Notre Dame way back in the 90's and served there a couple more years in the early 2000's, and also served as assistant AD at Western Michigan ..but left WMU in like 2001 and has never worked for them since...

He has now been at IU for 6 years, and it's been 9 years since he worked at WMU...
yet this guy says he is still assistant AD at WMU!

....OK -- I must be missing something...

Here's the news release...
"Terps Face Strong Schedule in 2009-10"
http://www.umterps.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/082509aaa.html

...and of course all ACC teams face the exact round robin conference schedule...and there's no denying it'll be tough...

so to claim you have an especially "TOUGH" schedule must mean you have a strong non-conference slate, right??

OK...then here is the entire list of their non-conference opponents...
Charleston Southern (a cupcake)
Fairfield (ultra cupcake)
New Hampshire (are they even D-I?)
Chaminade (I know these guys are NOT D-I)
Cincy
Indiana (should be easy)
Villanova (OK I admit this is better, but Villanova is expected to be way down and outside the Top 40!)
Eastern Kentucky (patsy - sorry EKU fans)
Winston Salem State (automatic easy win)
Florida Atlantic (ditto)
William and Mary (have they ever beaten an ACC team in their history?)

UNC-Greensboro (better than New Hampshire, but seriously??)

then after THREE conference games, on January 19...in mid-season, they have
LONGWOOD!! (wow, who thought of this, maybe they want to start up a JV program at Maryland and needed someone to play)

then the rest of their conference schedule..

so it is realistic that they will go 14-0 or 13-1 in non-conference play!!

Today we diverge

And instead of sports talk....a couple of new ideas for the classic Harry and Louise political ads.

FWIW--

#1

-Harry- I am a firm believer in global warming and it's gonna destroy life as we know it on earth unless the government steps in and mandates major changes and overhauls.
The only thing that would change my mind is if we suddenly had a year with the coolest temperatures in a century.
-
-
-Louise- ...but, Harry, so far this year we ARE having the coolest temperatures in a century!
-
-
-Harry- doesn't matter, like I said we're having global warming!

-
-
-
-

#2

-Harry- I hate tax breaks for the high end taxpayers. It's the same thing as handing over oodles of cash to the people who need it the least.
-
-
-Louise- How do you define those who are on the high end, as just about everyone believes they are already paying way too high taxes?
-
-
-Harry- I'd say anyone who can just drop $30-$40,000 and buy a new car in this economy is definitely a high end person and they shouldn't be getting tax breaks and free cash from the money being paid in by other taxpayers.
-
-
-Louise- But that's exactly what's happening, Harry, they call it Cash for Clunkers, and a million new car buyers are taking advantage of the government handouts.
-
-

-Harry- Doesn't matter, we elected him to stop giving breaks to the rich.
-
-
-

#3
-Harry- There never were any "death panels", and it's all being made up.
-
-
-Louise- But then why was the wording of the bill changed to remove the "death panels" after people objected?
-
-
-Harry- It was changed to satisfy Sarah Palin.
-
-
-Louise- But the President's top healthcare advisor has written a number of articles promoting strict rationing and withholding of health care services to the chronically ill and elderly, citing it is wasteful to spend those kinds of resources on people who will not be paying taxes into the system.
And the current government has reissued a 52-page VA pamphlet urging the old and infirm patients to stop seeking more treatment.
-
-
-Harry- Doesn't matter, those people have no right to bring up the death panel argument, it just slows down the process.
-
-
-Louise- but just last year wasn't it considered GOOD and PATRIOTIC to be a communty organizer and voice concerns over perceived government misdeeds and abuses?
-
-
-Harry- Doesn't matter, this year things are different.

Rivals' New Rankings

Rivals just updated their Class of 2010 rankings
http://bradleyfans.com/vb/showthread.php?t=12941

I can hardly dispute anyone's rankings, but a few oddities stand out...

The kid ranked here at #16 is Fabricio de Melo, commonly called Fab Melo.
Melo just verballed to Syracuse. But here's what's odd...
Some evaluators flat out say this kid is #1 and any ranking that fails to list him #1 is ridiculous.
so some evaluators really are ultra-high on Melo.
The other thing is that Melo just arrived in the US last spring, has never played an actual high school game, and the only evidence of how good he is comes from some AAU exposure.
We all know how vastly overinflated some people's assessments can be when using only a few AAU observations....as we all remember John Riek...who likewise zoomed to the absolute #1 spot in the rankings, before he eventually fell off the charts when people actually got to see him against some real defense.
Even Rivals had Melo in the Top 5 just a month ago....and all he did in the meantime was verbal to Syracuse and he's fallen out of the Top 15 now.
So I guess the jury is still out on Melo.
http://basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?SID=910&CID=961933
http://basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=97113&Sport=2

In the new Class of 2011 Rivals rankings...one kid who verballed to Indiana has zoomed from previously unranked to #86...Austin Etherington..
http://rivalshoops.rivals.com/viewrank.asp?ra_key=2288

and in Bob Gibbons' recent updated rankings (Top 175), the other IU verbal, a kid named David Williams zoomed all the way from untranked to #107.

So can someone tell me why a guy with a felony domestic assault/aggravated battery conviction and now another battery charge on a ref at a summer game is still coaching in District 150?
http://www.pjstar.com/preps/x772312712/Knights-coach-charged-with-battery

SIU's Bryan Mullins and his Irish National Team win one in Group B of qualifiers for the 2010 World Championships. They beat Luxembourg 101-83.
Bryan had a double double with 19 pts, 10 asst.

Fired for "a pattern of unacceptable behavior", but now he's being honored by being inducted into their Hall of Fame. But Bob Knight has NOT been back to the IU campus since his firing.

And, although we all knew this was the case.....Creighton had YET to officially announce that Cavel Witter had returned....maybe they were waiting to see if some other, maybe better kid would commit and need the scholarship...but no the word is out - Cavel is back...now confirmed by Dana Altman.
http://creighton.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=977676

Greg Allen, who was verballed and signed to Creighton but not admitted due to academics...appears headed to Chris Roberts' old school, Navarro College...
he has signed a LOI to Navarro and is enrolling there.

My challenge still stands from years ago....
name any player anywhere close to an impact player who's headed to a mid-major, that gets this kind of treatment?
NCAA waives the requirement of sitting out a year.....it only happens if an impact player is headed to a top caliber school.
will the streak end when Jake Kelly's situation gets announced?
It probably still won't be enough to keep Indiana State from being picked 9-10th in the Valley

Indiana becomes one of the first Big Ten schools to release their full schedule

http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/ind/sports/m-baskbl/auto_pdf/9-10sked.pdf

early comments...
"Not exactly full of juggernauts, but for a young team looking to improve upon a six-win season, that’s to be expected"
http://www.insidethehall.com/2009/08/19/indian-releases-2009-2010-mens-basketball-schedule/

the best opponents are the top conference opponents, the ACC/Big Ten matchup with Maryland, the Puerto Rico Tip Off opponents Ole Miss & poss. K-State, then Pitt in the Jimmy V Classic, and then the only one they actually scheduled that's tough may still be a down year - that's Kentucky.
Other softies are Howard, USC-Upstate, Northwestern State, North Carolina Central, Loyola of Maryland, Bryant....should give IU a chance to at least hit 10 wins this year.

Still waiting for some of the Valley schools to release schedules.

ISU has a bunch of players coming off injuries, and they have hired a new assistant coach Brendan Reilly.

One of the best known national recruiting expert has released his latest rankings of the Top 175 recruits from Class of 2010.
http://www.bobgibbons.net/index.php?/weblog/article/class_of_2010_post_summer_top_175_player_ratings/

Gibbons is one of the most knowledable and respected guys so I would also respect his rankings.
A few kids BU is or were after are on the list...
Jacob Thomas (#143), Ben Brust (#136), Vander Bllue(#101) and a couple others have been on BU's rader screen...but very few of the Top 175 will end up at mid-majors.

As I am typing this, the Irish National team is in Tbilisi, Georgia playing the Georgian National Team.
Ex- SIU Saluki and ex-Illinois Wolves player Bryan Mullins is doing great for the Irish team, unfortunately the irish team is not a really strong team...
and with about 7 minutes to go in the game, Ireland trails 75-62...and looks like they will go to 1-5 in Group B of the European preliminaries for next year's 2010 world Championships.
If anyone wants to watch it live on Gametracker...it'll still be on for a few minutes right here...
Click the live link at the bottom right of this page...

Bryan is having a good game - 18 pts, 2 rebs, but only 1 asst.

[EDIT: I am adding this later, and the game is now in the books. Georgia wins over Ireland 98-73.
Mullins had 18 pts (missed a three at the buzzer), 2 rebounds, and 1 asst., he was the leading scorer on both teams.
Ireland drops to 1-5 in Group B prelim play while Georgia goes to 5-1.]

Whoa...seems like a lot of Bruce Pearl's players and ex-players are in court or getting arrested ...
This time it's JaJuan Smith
http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2009/aug/18/smith-arrested-assault/?partner=RSS

last week it was Ramar Smith
http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2009/aug/13/armed-drug-charges-against-ex-vol-sent-grand-jury/
in just the past couple years....
Duke Crews, Anthony Passley, Jordan Smith, Jemere Hendrix, Andre Patterson....the list is nearing Bob Huggins-like quality...
Can anyone tell me how a coach can have that many players in just a couple years' span who turn out to have very, very serious criminal and drug issues?
Is talent the only thing some coaches EVER look at??

One of Indiana's verbals, a kid from out west, transferred to the Indiana high school that just
won the state title last spring, and is going to play right there in Bloomington, Indiana so he can begin working with the Indiana University trainersd and get a head start.
But, the IHSAA has held up the kid's eligibility as trasfers for athletic purposes are not allowed!
Wouldn't it be bizarre if the kid and his family move all the way across country and are not able to play there??

No sooner does on recruiting analyst write about a kid...in this case a kid who ISN't getting a lot of offer.
Here's an odd recruiting article. Generally most recruiting articles talk all about the offers a kid is getting. This one talks about how this kid ISN'T getting any offers!
I've just never seen an article talk so much about how a kid is NOT getting any offers!!!

"Attention, but few offers for Dukan"
(here are a few clips from the premium story per scout.com...)
"Deerfield (Ill.) High School's Duje Dukan is getting looks from a lot of schools, including Northwestern. But despite a solid summer on the AAU circuit, the pure-shooting 6-8 wing has yet to receive many offers.

Whatever the reason, Deerfield (Ill.) High School standout Duje Dukan – a 6-8 wing and member of the 2010 class – simply isn’t racking up scholarship offers. He's getting looks, sure. But to this point, the offers just aren't coming in....

Nonetheless, there aren’t many offers to speak of – not just from NU, but from almost anywhere. And that fact is baffling to Dukan’s coaches.

“I’m a little surprised that (his recruitment) hasn’t gone absolutely crazy..."

..............then the Ilprepbullseye write as they always do about the same kid and turn their complete coverage into a slam against what the other guy said.

can they please just report without bickering so much?

Where is the NCAA's honesty....remember the investigation into Memphis and the possible loss of all their wins because Derrick Rose didn't take his own ACT??
Well, back on June 6th, the NCAA said a ruling would come in 6-8 weeks.
"An NCAA spokeswoman said a ruling is expected between six and eight weeks from now."
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=4236869

Of course, in the meantime, the NCAA sure found time to clobber SEMO again and drive them into the dark ages...but still no ruling on Memphis and that statement was made almost 10 weeks ago now.
Does this surprise anyone, as it has now been almost 5 years since the initial proof was offered that USC was cheating and allowing Reggie Bush to live in luxury...and more than 3 years since the proof was confirmed beyond doubt by the series of YahooSports articles.
Nope...just more proof they will do anything they can before smiting one of their boys!!

Despite all the clamor over the Rick Pitino issue....many coaches have serious legal behavior problems.....DUI's, drugs, bribery, recruiting thugs, and even time spent in jail...
so what about Pitino's behavior was illegal?
I don't think it's admirable, and I do have my very serious doubts about the honesty of the accuser (for example, how can a woman in her 40's know for certain she's PG within less than TWO WEEKS after an encounter. The physiology at that age just isn't that reliable.)

Here is a little bit more from an exclusive source...........

--the certified final score was 82-61. Bradley played well. Just a little sloppy at first, but not much at all. The opponents were bigger and stronger than a lot of college teams, they clearly had year round training and weights, so it's good the BU guys had been doing the same. They also were good outside shooters as it seems all international teams are. The starters were Eddren McCain, Dodie Dunson, Taylor Brown, Chris Roberts, and Sam Singh. Sam M. played off the bench but came in right away and played as many minutes as DD and CR who all played about evenly and played the most minutes.
--the game was described as very exciting, really well organized play by both teams. BU took a gradual, early lead and held on, cruising to about 20 pts ahead most of the late fourth quarter.
--everyone played decent minutes, except for Andrew Warren who did not play, and Will Egolf, who entered in the first half but played only a few minutes total - as would be expected in his first actual competition in nearly a year.
--Ryan Phillips was described as playing very well - even dunked one
--the opponent, Fluminense, was described as "was very competitive. However, BU pulled"..away...the pro team Fluminense were - as expected with a pro team - very well organized, had a lot of set offensive and even defensive strategy, surprise double teams, etc.. They played well enough to win had BU not also played quite well.It was an awesome test to play a team this good right off the bat. They were not the usual exhibition opponent that had tons of turnovers and poor shooting...nope...BU actually beat a decent team who might be compared to the caliber of a good D-II team.
--here are two more direct quotes from an observer at the game, and I am sure you will love these......
------- "The Brizilian crowd seemed excited by out guys"
and this one, that I love as well.......
------- "Especially CR who "wowed" the crowd with several dunks"
then a little more about the fun the boys had after the game....they went to a dinner and a Brazilian dance demonstration, and also a drummer demonstration and then a really fine dinner - all together as a team.It is truly a top notch tour so far and the team is building not only a great comeraderie, but also lifetime memories.

My last comment....is on a discipline issue. I am sure most have read this headline:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/07/sports/basketball/07nba.html

"The N.B.A. on Thursday suspended the Orlando Magic All-Star forward Rashard Lewis for 10 games for violating its policy on performance-enhancing drugs"

Seriously, 10 full games?
The guy gets caught cheating, his team just made it all the way to the NBA FINALS with a cheater as one of the key players! and all the NBA does is tell the guy to sit out 10 games, then everything's OK.
If I get caught driving without a license and under the influence of illegal substances, I hope the officer tell me that my penalty is to sit out ten minutes, then go ahead and drive all you want!
This is ridiculous and shows me that the NBA doesn't have the least bit of interest in limiting the use of dope in the NBA.

The few people who have come forward in pro sports with honest and unpressured testimony such as Ken Caminiti and Jose Canseco suggest the use of drugs is way more widespread than most think, with not just 50% or more pro athletes doing it, but maybe even more like 90% doing it. As long as the sports remain popular and money is rolling in, the sports really don't want to police too hard or get too many headlines for drug use.

Worst D-I Non-Conference Schedule?

I have been checking every D-I school that announces their non-conference schedule or completed schedule. I know all 340 D-I schools have yet to publish theirs, but I am going to go ahead and award the prize for the worst one right now.
Everyone else is entitled to their opinion on this.....but here is the non-conference schedule for Wyoming of the Mountain West Conference:

11/07/09 vs. Regis Univ. (exh.) - home
11/13/09 vs. South Dakota State - home
11/18/09 vs. Peru State (Neb.) - home (NAIA Division II)
11/21/09 vs. Boise State - home
11/25/09 at Denver (tournament)
11/27/09 vs. Monmouth Univ. (N.J.) -home
11/28/09 vs. Hampton Univ. (Va.) - home
11/29/09 vs. Pepperdine - home
12/05/09 vs. Loyola Marymount - home
12/12/09 vs. Northern Colorado - home
12/15/09 at Tennessee -away
12/20/09 vs. South Dakota - home
12/23/09 at Northern Iowa -away
12/30/09 vs. Akron - home
01/02/10 vs. Adams State (DII) - home
http://www.wyomingathletics.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/080409aaa.html

Ok...sure, they go one the road and play one sacrifical game, a guarantee game in Knoxville, and the one at UNI isn't something they scheduled, it's part of the MWC/MVC Challenge.

but seriously....a middle of the season non-conference game vs. Adams State??
and an early season non-conference game (not an exhibition) against Peru State?
If anyone knows of a worse D-I non-conference schedule, let me know.

One of Tom Crean's twitters oddly appears to reveal who two of his starting players are going to be, and this is pretty early to be concluding that kind of decision!
....(speaking of one of the opponent players)"He can really shoot the 3.
Jeremiah (Rivers) wants to guard him but we may have to put Verdell
(Jones) on him. We may need to put JR (Rivers) on Terrico White."

Braves Learn All the New International (FIBA) Rules

International basketball has a few rules that differ from NCAA play, including the freedom to swat balls on the rim and the different 3-pt line.
The Braves had a session today with a FIBA referee to get a lesson on the new rules and what to expect.
http://twitter.com/CoachKyleVogt/status/3130281195

Tom Crean made another twitter blunder today....kinda funny!
First he tweets this...
"The first 50 twitter followers that email me at mbasket@indiana.edu
will get a personalized signed picture from me. Send your address."

Chances are good he got a big response, then issues an immediate
qualifying statement...
"
Due to NCAA rules i cannot send one to a prospect 7th grade through 12th grade
or their families. Sorry about that."

later he said he had over 300 responses in the first 18 minutes since the first tweet.

Less than two days until the Braves leave for Brazil!

Selby - Pearl

An example of hypocrisy:
On BradleyFans.com there's a discussion going about top recruit Josh Selby and his decommitting from Tennessee. There is also an article linked in which a writer says we should shed no tears about Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl losing a recruit to underhanded dealings in the recruiting world, since Pearl has been one of the lead guys doing this to other schools.
Here is that article, although it's a premium article:
http://kentucky.scout.com/a.z?s=48&p=2&c=884082&ssf=1&RequestedURL=http%3a%2f%2fkentucky.scout.com%2f2%2f884082.html

but here is the key line in that premium article:
"Pearl's recruiting tactics had come full circle over the last 24 months. While
many are privately bemoaning some programs continuing to recruit Selby after
he gave a commitment to UT, Pearl is not deserving of anyone's sympathy.
Once upon a time when a basketball prospect gave a commitment to a school
then other schools would stop recruiting that athlete, it was something of a
gentleman's unspoken agreement in the world of college basketball. That
standard no longer applies, and one of the reasons it no longer applies is
Tennessee's Bruce Pearl. .."

...then he goes on to give examples of Pearl pulling the same shenanigans, so he has nobody to blame but himself that this kind of backstabbing occurs in his profession. The discussion then moves to Bruce Pearl and his recruitment and tampering of Joah Tucker while Tucker was still under scholarship at Bradley -- a very clear NCAA violation.

One poster says this...
"absolutely, 100% did not happen .."

then when that poster was challenged with evidence that Tucker did indeed have unauthorized contact with the coaches at Wisconsin-Milwaukee while under BU scholarship, the very same poster then says...
"of course he had contact with the coaching staff at UW-M"

bingo....what hypocrisy!! One second saying the coaches at UW-M did nothing wrong, then instantly admitting they had contact with Tucker that wasn't approved by the school Tucker was under scholarship to.
That constitutes a SIGNIFICANT NCAA violation.
It is an old story, so I have no desire to drag it on and on, but only to point out the anti-BU forces are still lurking.
I might also point out that the few (and I mean very few who are still holding out) BU-bashers contain at least two of the disgruntled, ex-BU athletic department employees who are still on a vendetta to smear BU and the athletic department.
Their identities and their motives are pretty clear to all who view, but if you still don't know who I mean, then PM me on the board.

Nice news!!! Will Egolf has been cleared to play in Brazil. I suspect he will play limited minutes and be used cautiously.

The final Player Outlook is up on Bradley Examiner
http://www.examiner.com/x-7020-Bradley-Braves-Examiner~y2009m8d4-200910-Player-Outlook-Andrew-Warren

but I think Andrew Warren will do considerably better than his numbers two years ago....

I have solid confirmation that at least two of the walk ons, Ryan Phillips & Ned Goertzen, are going to Brazil, contrary to what was reported elsewhere.

Creighton got a verbal from Will Artino. While Creighton was strongly pursuing numerous 3-Star and even 4-Star kids, this kid, Artino, is way under the radar.
He is 1-Star on scout.com, 2-Stars on Rivals.
http://bradleyfans.com/vb/showthread.php?t=12799

He is from a tiny town in Iowa, and has attended two different small schools.
Some sites state him to be only 6-8, but this site also rates Artino as a top baseball prospect, with a mid-80's fastball and a lot of potential.
Could the Jays lose the kid to baseball?
http://www.pgcrosschecker.com/Articles/DisplayArticle.aspx?article=712

Oddly, the Artino family had to pursue legal process in order to get Will eligible in high school, since his transfer from being a part-time home schooled kid at Des Moines Christian to Waukee, was alleged to be purely for athletic reasons, and that's a violation of Iowa rules. In the end, the Artino's were assessed a 90-day penalty in athletic eligibility.

On the Indiana front...........
...obviously IU needs desperately a PG and a big man...
...so with the only two scholarships they have between now and 2012, they get verbals from David Williams and now 3-Star Austin Etherington...both are essentially similar players... SG's/wings...exactly what they already appear to have a tremendous excess of.
The IU fans are stumped..especially when Indiana is linked with numerous top, 4 and 5-Star scorers and big men!
http://indiana.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=731&tid=130556000&mid=130556000&sid=942&style=2

almost certainly this means someone's going to get Creaned off the present roster to open up more rides. Time will tell.........
BTW-- in a speech last night, Tom Crean touched on the issue of his highly rated incoming recruiting class.
Unfortunately what he said was not too encouraging in regard to the only big man, Bawa Muniru, and their highest rated incoming kid, Maurice Creek.
He said... "Maurice Creek and Bawa Muniru are really close (to qualifying)"
of course it's a BCS school, so expect them to get cleared...but if not cleared by August, it really could mean trouble...
