Congrats PCS, some secret scrimmage info, and more..

Big Congratulations to the Peoria Christian boys soccer team as they lose the State Championship game 1-0 but still finish a fine season and take home the 2nd place trophy!!

UIC and new head coach Howard Moore (ex-BU assistant)...
had an intrasquad scrimmage Friday night -- and the "Red Team" that had most of their projected starters - led by Robo Kreps & Zavion Neeley (their two top scorers last year)
got absolutely hammered and embarrassed by their "White Team" made up entirely of either players who didn't play last year or deep subs who were well under 5 ppg last year.

Final score was 49-29 in a 30 minute game...
Robo Kreps did get some consolation - as the 6-1 senior guard from Maroa-Forsyth won the slam dunk contest!!
http://www.uicflames.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/kreps_robo00.html

At Indiana - they had their intrasquad scrimmage Friday, and walk-on Daniel Moore did his best Lebron James imitation and dominated with 18 points, 5 assists, 4 steals..in a 30 min scrimmage
gotta wonder how good is IU gonna be when a 5-10 walk-on who's never been more than a deep sub, and who scored a grand total of 36 points last season, and is a career 1 ppg scorer and 33% shooter leads them in such a dominant fashion??

Matt Roth had 10 pts on 2-5 from 3-pt range, 1 reb, no asst..
Some of the other expected starters struggled also -- Maurice Creek had 4 pts, Tom Pritchard had just 2 points, and Verdell Jones sat it out with ankle problems, Jeremiah Rivers out with a concussion..

Creighton played a closed scrimmage at Colorado Saturday night---

In doing a little digging and checking some "secret" tweets...here's some info I have garnered from what's being said..
-NC State won their scrimmage vs. George Washington
http://packinsider.com/forum/wolfpack-hoops/secret-scrimmage/#p16422

-IP-Ft. Wayne reportedly beat Central Michigan in their closed scrimmage last night.

-one of the Iowa State players, Jordan Railey, tweets about today's scrimmage vs. Bradley!

Manual's Paris Gulley, who Bradley watched while he was at Manual, is returning to Southern Community College (Iowa) for his sophomore season, and he got honorable mention All District his freshman season there..

But note this -- he's being billed this season as 6-1 -- so did he grow at least 2-3 more inches, or is he being "helped" by their SID??
http://njcaa.org/colleges_college_player.cfm?sid=4&collegeid=1672&category=Roster&slid=2&teamid=106115&athleteid=286246

Paris' averages last year -- he was the top scoring freshman on their squad -
8.7 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 77% FT shooting, 44% 3-pt shooting (49-112)

so is he a D-I candidate??
Here is a current article -- nice coverage -- especially for a junior college...
http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/yb/151646849

At University of Tennessee -- fans wanna find out who ratted on Pearl and nail them by digging up some dirt on them!! Of course Bruce Pearl being ratted out is simple payback in kind for what he did to University of Illinois...

John Calipari is after other schools' recruits again-- seems that when kids commit that's a green light for Calipari to turn up the heat and steal their best recruits...

One last comment about the column in the newspaper ripping on Bradley and the efforts of some unnamed players---
Note, if you read the artilce, the writer really has absolutely NOTHING to go on -- he takes one comment from Andrew Warren -- something that's so clearly taken out of context, then using that comment, and enormous amounts of speculation on his own and a weak attempt to try to portray his own speculation as more words coming from Andrew Warren -- and he indicts the entire team!
Then of course we have KW-defenders who go berserk and rant all over the place that this is good journalism.
But it is not -- it wouldn't even be considered decent blogging or Nat'l Enquirerer stuff, except maybe just behind the "I delivered an alien baby" stories...

I dare anyone to cite for me any daily paper with so many totally inaccurate stories, libelous errors that require retractions and apologies, and flat our falsehoods being reported as fact?

Here's is just a very short list of some of the sports reports we've seen that have had NO basis in fact and that were hideous journalism and falsehoods disguised as sports reporting..

-They reported that Jordan Prosser was forced to redshirt against his will then admitted that one was a lie...
-ligature marks on the neck of Daniel Ruffin's accuser - which did not exist
-battered with hands and feet was the original description of the event
-BU never made an effort to explain their building plans - this story dragged out for weeks, all the while the full plans and blueprints were placed on public display for all to see
-renegade program..ha, maybe more like renegade sports department
-buyout...this one wasn't even worthy of a mention, but no rumor is too ridiculous or false to get a writeup in our rag
-Manual Cass verbals to BU..most don't remember this, but the earliest editions said Manual Cass verballed to Bradley then they were changed when the truth was known that he verballed to DePaul
-JW verbals to U of I..this was a story in the paper based on an inaccurate and false claim by an Iowa State fan on his blog site!
Can you imagine if they cut and pasted everything I said, even though my stuff is always accurate!!
-TB stalking his rival..never happened but got reported as if factual
-TCS getting nasty e mails, phone calls, and text messages, none of which were ever seen...later even TCS' dad admitted most of the original reports were lies, but the PJS went with them anyway and never admitted the mistakes
-our local reporters printed and reported as if proven fact that while Cellus was at Iowa, the BU contacted him and lured him to Bradley...some element of this laughably erroneous lie still exist, but even the original source of the claims, Carl Sommerville, has flatly proven it all to be a lie, and it never happened...
Also the time line as already proven by the PJS would have made it impossible
-Bruce Weber used the "N" word in talking to and about the Chicago coaches..this is one of the insane claims that likely led to Bill Liesse getting canned..
-JL on the hot seat..this one comes up about every other day -- and then the mantra beings anew coming from the anti-BU clones on the message boards
-turmoil all abounding on the hilltop..about every other week -- some new issue is hinted or alleged -- generally leading into the renegade arguments -- but we never see any links or proof of any of this...Somehow kids tweeting silly things garners bigger headlines in Peoria than Jim Thome setting all time records or BU kids getting record GPA's and graduation rates.
The if you don't have a fact and don't have a name of a player to go with it -- then who cares, just make it up...there's enough low IQ and gullibe readers out there, that facts won't matter -- they'll take this empty column and run with it and post 25 times in one thread!
-steaming pile of 2-guard..the other really stoopid remark that made frequent Illini message board poster Bill Liesse look silly and dishonest - and probably led to him getting booted

...which brings me to the final silly argument that we see endlessly -- that at the very same time that Bradley is secretive, they won't talk to the press, they won't make the players or coaches available for interviews and that they aren't honest about injuries, potential starters, and internal workings of the team...

..at that point, then we see an interview with one single vague line from a freely given Andrew Warren interview - saying in effect that sometimes we played bad last year -- and the column gets played into a full blown speculative rant about numerous serious deficiencies that each individual player had causing the whole team to melt down...
Hmmm...if this was your team would you ever let one of your players talk to the press again?? EVER??
If all the players, coaches, and even the fans are fair targates for such ridiculous rips and attacks, then how silly is it that some argue the PJS writers should be immune to any criticism, they are only doing their job and stirring the pot.

Congrats Chargers, Follow the BU greats, and more news on recruiting and cheating

First, congratulations to the Peoria Christian boys soccer who won last night and advanced to the State Finals Chamionship game tonight against Lisle.
I have had the great pleasure of coaching virtually every one of those kids at some point, and I am very happy for them and proud of them.

Likewise, Peoria Notre Dame's boys soccer won a very tight and difficult match last night against Morton to advance. I have also coached some of their guys in days gone by and they even have one kid that transferred to PND from PCS!

Good luck to both teams in the State Tournament and bring home the hardware!
I'll be up there in Naperville with about 1000 other PCS fans -- even Lisle, whose school is located just 5 miles from the location of the IHSA soccer playoffs, didn't bring any bigger and better crowd than PCS did!!

Here's a great inside story of Illinois' Jerrance Howard and top recruit Mike Shaw who Illinois just landed...

it details how it was ALL Jerrance that dealt with the top recruit, and how Jerrance became a "big brother" to Shaw and did just about everything on a regular daily basis except move in and room with the kid...
In fact, some of this sounds a little fishy but I guess it was all legal...

http://illinois.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1145323

But read some of what Mike Shaw says ...he mentions that
"Illinois first made contact with him when he was still in 8th grade"...

In this John Supinie column the quote goes this way...
"I grew up watching Illinois,'' Shaw said. "When I saw coach Weber in the stands when I was younger, it was real big for me. As I got older, he was always there from the jump. I felt they really wanted me. I felt the love.''
He's been a target since the Illini first made contact in the eighth grade."

http://www.mysuburbanlife.com/warrenville/statenews/x1471838323/Updated-Mike-Shaw-verbally-commits-to-Illinois

But -- it is a VERY CLEAR NCAA violation for anyone associated with Illinois to "make contact" with Shaw when he's in 8th grade....so this is also quite suspicious...hmmm...

Anyway -- what's with Wayne McClain?? How come no article on recruiting in the past several tears even mentions McClain? I thought he was the man for the Illinois pipeline and Peoria pipeline? What's his job there?

Lots of Bradley news, Valley news, and stuff of interest...

Bradley hosts Texas A&M - Kingsville in an early season game....
The Texas A&M Kingsville site lists their game against Bradley as part of the Hall of Fame Tipoff tournament- as apparently it was originally planned...
http://www.javelinaathletics.com/schedule.cfm?sp=BSKM
http://www.javelinaathletics.com/press_release.cfm?pass_num=1908&spcode=BSKM

Bradley's schedule says its part of the tournament, too-
http://www.bradleybraves.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=3400&KEY=&SPID=1498&SPSID=19332

But something oddball has happened, and maybe the HOF Tourney folks think that's just one too many D-II teams -- so they seem to disavow any connection with Texas A&M-K...
The Hall of Fame Tipoff official site does not even mention Texas A&M Kingsville at all-
http://www.halloffametipoff.com/
Here they list 3 D2 and 2 D3 teams, but not the Javalinas-
http://www.halloffametipoff.com/teams.php
schedule-
http://www.halloffametipoff.com/schedule.php

I just got confirmation from a good independent source, that indeed what we have heard about Jordan Prosser is absolutely true -- that he's still growing and is indeed ALL OF 6-9 and really putting on muscle.
Will Egolf is also now 6-9.5!

Here's a list of all the Valley exhibitions that take place before Bradley's exhibition on Nov. 6...

This Saturday, Oct. 30 - SIU hosts Quincy in their new renovated arena, and Evansville hosts DePauw
Sunday, Oct. 31 - Missouri State plays Upper Iowa
Next Tuesday, Nov. 2 - UNI plays Wartburg & Indiana State plays Rose-Hulman
Next Thursday, Nov. 4 - Creighton hosts Northern State

Illinois plays Lewis tonight...this should be interesting to see how the Illini freshmen do...

Some news from sources around the Missouri Valley --

At Indiana State...
Several injuries reported..
Jake Kelly had a collision and hurt his knee -- same knee that was surgically repaired when he tore his ACL, he was being held out of practice
Jake Odum, sprained foot...but has returned to practice
Carl Richard suffered a concussion on the 2nd day of practice, and is being held out and should be ready for the beginning of the season
Myles Walker jammed a finger and sat out a practice

Illinois State - lots of nagging injuries...
Jackie Carmichael & Justin Clark - ankle injuries
Austin Hill - nagging Achilles tendon injury -- he had this same thing last season and missed playing time because of it..
all three have missed practices..
ISU has a closed scrimmage Nov. 6 vs. WIU -- maybe I'll call Mo and get some info ...;)

ISU maybe planning a Red-White scrimmage..pretty short notice, so will they get it done?

Dana Altman might already be having a flashback to when he bolted to coach Arkansas then quit and went running back to Creighton...
now at Oregon he's had tons of problems already - player departures, scandals involving players, and now this...
At the Pac-10 Media Day -- Dana's Oregon squad is not only picked to finish dead last in the weak Pac-10, but he's further behind the team ahead of him that if he even doubled his vote tally in the poll, he'd still be in LAST PLACE!!!

Cheating at it's worst -- in the Paralympics (handicapped participants only)...
but the Paralympic basketball team from Spain has been cheating for a full decade, using perfectly healthy players who disguised themselves as and corruptly posed as handicapped people - thus not only cheating and now looking horrible that they're caught, but also having cheated other truly handicapped players from participating!
Only Bruce Pearl would stoop this low!!
http://blogs.bettor.com/Cheating-in-Paralympics-How-the-Spanish-Paralympics-Basketball-team-won-gold-a37434

Speaking of Bruce Pearl -- here's an interesting discussion...
Just who ratted on Pearl?? Remember that Pearl hosted a super-secret bash & Party for recruits at his multimillion dollar mansion in Knoxville, TN...
this was against NCAA rules and in fact violated numerous rules in that the recruits were under just juniors and could NOT be hosted on campus or in home, and they got gobs of impermissible freebies while they were there at Bruce's home.
Anyway -- somehow, the NCAA not only learned of the bash but also had in their possession the picture taken at Bruce's home showing the recruits and the coaches and their wives partying it up...
and of course that's the photo that Bruce lied about saying he didn't know a thing about it and didn't know where it was taken...

Anyway -- the hot topic is...how did the NCAA get the photo, who tipped them off, and who ratted to put the investigators onto Pearl's tail??

recall it was Bruce himself who engineered an elaborate plot to fool recruit Deon Thomas into saying secret things on the phone and Bruce jotted those things down (supposedly) and then ratted on the NCAA to embroil Illinois in the charges of recruiting improprieties 20 years ago...
So is this just cosmic karma?? What goes around, comes around?? So who got the goods on Bruce and had the picture and ratted to NCAA?
I am kinda really surprised the rest of the press and media haven't tried to find out or tried to flush out the guy who turned stoolie on Pearl the way Pearl turned stoolie on Lou Henson & Jimmy Collins & the Illini nation.

Marcus Pollard story, NCAA lawsuit, and more cheating topics...

Here's a great new story all about our Marcus Pollard!!
...his life, his NFL experience, his faith, great read!!!
http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/yb/151543219

Looks like ISU is planning a Red-White intra-squad scrimmage. This is something they have not always done..and details are pending...
http://www.pantagraph.com/app/blogs/main/?p=5575#more-5575

Here's an interesting article that appears to be seeking to get some or all college scholarships as four-year deals rather than one year at a time.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=5727755

Some may argue it is unfair, maybe, but this desire to force schools to guarantee a scholarship as much as 4 years into the future is kind of insane in my mind...

In fact, in the first place - getting a scholarship is a tremendous opportunity and blessing!!!
No kid, athlete, or student is ever forced either by gunpoint or otherwise to sign a financial aid agreement or to accept a scholarship...
it is obviously all of their own choosing or free will...and all the terms are made clear and plain up front.
Same goes for coaches...and if or when a coach chooses to leave early, he does violate his terms and is NOT due any of the rest of his contract or pay...

Any time a kid lands a scholarship offer and chooses to sign on the dotted line, he receives a TREMENDOUS benefit...something worth perhaps as much as $30,000, $40,000, $50,000 or more for each year...and maybe $200,000 or more in value if he stays on scholarship for four years...so what's really the issue here, since the vast, vast majority of kids do have the chance to stay on scholarship for 4 years...
Of all D-I scholarship athletes, far less than 10% -- and maybe more in the range of less than 5% ever get their scholarships pulled out from under them..
Basically it never happens at most schools, and only rarely at others...
The far more common scenario is that the kids don't like what they are getting and choose on their own voluntarily to leave and go elsewhere.
How many of these Alex Legion/Seth Curry/Joah Tucker/Danny Granger type of players are there -- kids who are still welcomed to stay and play where they are getting their scholarship, but have some issues and want to try to shop their talents and do better?

So I contend that the biggest part of the benefits on the scholarships is already on the side of the kids & athletes....now they want ever MORE....
you don't think for a second that this legal action is just a step in trying to get scholarships to all be four-year deals??
It's basically a greedy, entitlement money-grab is all it is........
some special interest people just wanna go after the deep pockets...

Here's some Tennessee news that's only marginally about Bruce Pearl!!
Tennessee's women's coaching legend Pat Summit slams UConn and maybe Bruce Pearl all in one statement..

Here's a quote from the SEC Media event...and it's no secret that Tennessee's Pat Summitt does NOT like UConn's Geno Aurilemma...

"Mr. Auriemma's presumed cheating is the reason, she admitted last week, why three years ago she canceled the annual games between the two women's basketball powerhouses.

..Last week, she dragged Connecticut's name through the mud again in a discussion about recruiting at a Southeastern Conference media day event. "I've never compromised at all, and I wouldn't. And if I did, they should fire me," Ms. Summitt said. She was asked if she was talking about Bruce Pearl, Tennessee's men's basketball coach, who is currently under investigation for recruiting infractions.

"I didn't have Bruce Pearl on my mind. I probably had Connecticut on my mind. There's a reason we don't play them," she said."

Hmmm...so kind of a slam at BOTH Bruce and UConn!!
http://www.courant.com/news/opinion/editorials/hc-ed-pat-summitt-geno-auriemma-feud-20101026,0,2960311.story

Now the Knicks cheating scandal -- holding secret workouts for years involving college players who then went back and played further in college...
but what went on at these secret workouts is actually pretty important in maybe qualifying whther those players cheated, received impermissible benefits, or whether they may have even LOST their amateur status and have thus been ineligible when they went back to college...
Anyone recall the Randolph Morris issue
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/mensbasketball/sec/2005-07-11-kentucky-morris_x.htm
And more recently there have been other players who wanted to return to college after having these workouts and the NCAA penalized them significantly!

Anyway -- note the players who were known to be involved, but this is probably just the tip of the iceberg!!
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-knicksdraft102610

These "secret workouts" are not only violations of NBA rules, but may also be violations of NCAA rules for players who return to college after "testing the waters" prior to the NBA draft.

One such player who was involved in the secret workouts was Kansas' Brandon Rush --
and during his secret workout he suffered a devastating knee injury that required surgery and ACL reconstruction...but it made Rush return to college...

Other players who no longer fear any action by NCAA since they are already in the pros have come forward...

Rush, who returned to college, went on to help Kansas win the NCAA Championship...
Since these workouts were secret -- we may never know, but if any special benefits were extended to Rush -- money, favors, benefits, promises, even just free transportation or food...
then in all likelihood, Rush may have violated rules that would have made him ineligible to return to college...thus the entire Championship season for Kansas may have been tainted with an ineligible player!

http://www2.kusports.com/news/2010/oct/27/brandon-rush-hid-truth-specifics-knee-injury-2007/

Bill Self is upset that he was lied to regarding the circumstances of the knee injury..

So -- in the end -- even though Memphis was penalized and had to forfeit all their games in 2007-2008 due to Derrick Rose's eligibility -- we now see evidence that Kansas won that NCAA Championship game using TWO players who likely had eligibility concerns or who were ineligible -- recall Darrell Arthur also had grade changes and academic fraud like Rose did but since ti was Kansas -- ahem -- the NCAA looked the other way -- just as they'll do on this case with Rush!

Here's a new story on Jamar Snith headed to the NBDL (NBA Development League)
http://illinihq.com/blogs/basketblog/2010/10/26/former_illini_jamar_smith_signs_pro

Here's more on foreign players who lie and falsify their age. Aliong with this type of lying, they usually also try to hide their prior overseas professional playing history...

Here's a kid ( and I use that term lightly)...named Josue Mulamba
http://rivals.yahoo.com/jucojunction/basketball/recruiting/player-Josue-Mulamba-119629

http://jucojunction.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1144124

The guy comes, like Shang Ping did, without a shread of documents or evidence that he's ever been to high school - so his only way to get eligible is going the juco route...

Here's a picture -- I think the guy looks at 30 years old or MORE!!

http://vmedia.rivals.com/uploads/1090/1011060.jpg

They claim he's 23 already -- but does this guy look like an 23 year old? No way. I am guessing he's probably in his 30's or older. They admit he's 23, because to try to suggest he is younger would be ridiculed.
BUT --- here are several sites that list Josue's birthdate as being June 1986 -- thus he's already AT LEAST 24 1/2 years old...even if that date can be believed...
and I suspect even that is probably a lie

But interestingly it also points out that he's played professional ball!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josue_Mulamba
http://www.bbl.net/index.php/b19sYW5nPWVuJm9fc2Vhcz0yMSZvX2xlYWc9OCZmdXNlYWN0aW9uPXBsYXllcnMubWFpbiZwPTExNTg=

Some of the links on this guy are under different names (helloooo-- any surprise here..?)

Try this name...
Dzozue Mulamba
http://www.google.com/search?q=basketball&hl=en&ned=us&tab=nw#sclient=psy&hl=en&safe=off&q=%22D%C5%BEozu%C4%97+Mulamba%22&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=&pbx=1&fp=17600492eafeca3b

and Dsozua Mulamba
http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&hl=en&safe=off&q=%22D%C5%BEo%C5%A1ua+mulamba%22&aq=f&aqi=g-c4g-o1&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=&pbx=1&fp=17600492eafeca3b

and just about every variant you can imagine..
Dzosua Malumba
http://sportacentrs.com/basketbols/bbl/01032009-grafs_liels_prieks_par_uzvaru

and Josue Mulumba
http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&hl=en&safe=off&q=%22josue+mulumba%22&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=%22josue+mulumba%22&gs_rfai=&pbx=1&fp=17600492eafeca3b

...plus Malumbo and many other spellings......

BUT--- there's even more suspicions -- there's a kid who has gone by the name Christian Malumba that played prep school ball in the past and he looks amazingly similar to Josue Malumba...and is also 6-10..
So -- are we seeing a deceptive pattern here -- haven't we heard this many times before? Especially with the kids from Decatur Christian and Boys to Men??

Speaking of this topic...also in the news -- Gorgui Dieng...
http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/17191/dieng-gets-eligible-for-louisville

So we have yet another example of a foreign kid with virtually no academic records and a blank background...he was barely recruited because many schools feared he'd never get NCAA clearance -- he had virtually nothing to document his academic records before getting to the US -- but Louisville took a chance...and of course the NCAA cleared him!!
He wasn't even cleared to play initially at the historic diploma mill prep school, Huntington Prep and couldn't even play high school ball for a while!!!
..and initially the NCAA ruled him INELIGIBLE -- but Rick Pitino personally appealed to the NCAA and they cleared him!
Had this kid gone to BU or a mid-major he'd have been denied for sure..
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/news?slug=ap-louisville-dieng

Watch on the Malumba kid -- if he goes to a big school -- he'll get cleared even with the shady background, but woe to any mid-major that might recruit him!

I have been told by somewhat of an authority that players who are not eligible are also NOT eligible to travel with teams for intra-squad scrimmages...thus all the transfer players that Iowa State has won't be playing in the closed scrimmage this Sunday at Bradley.

Valley Media Day and Fall Signing period coming up

Media Day -- here's the full MVC release of the polling for conference finish and preseason All Conference teams...
http://www.mvc-sports.com//pdf8/718978.pdf

Here's how the MVC finish is predicted......
MVC Men’s Basketball
Preseason Poll
School (First-Place Votes) Total
1. Wichita State (33)........382
2. Missouri State (1)........313
3. UNI (3)...................289
4. Creighton ................282
5. Bradley (2)...............264
6. Illinois State............165
7. Indiana State.............136
8. Drake.....................121
9. Southern Illinois.........120
10. Evansville................73

I find it quite interesting that Bradley still got two 1st place votes, and if we ended up in 5th place overall in the vote tally, that surely means then that some voters must have even picked BU lower than 5th -- so no team seems to be all over as much as Bradley in the eyes of those who voted (which include the head coach, Sports Information Director, play-by-play radio guy, and press beat reporter from each Valley team.)
But since only 39 1st place votes are tallied, then obviously one of those 40 potential voters did not submit their ballot.

Whoever wrote the text of the release definitely did not proof read it...as it says right away that "UNI earned 382 out of a possible 390 points", but obviously they mean Wichita State.
Also -- there are quite a few other errors...
"That trio all averaged better than 31 points per game for coach Jim Les and combined
to average 41.0 points"
"Greg Lansing takes over as head coach after spending the last eight seasons as an assistant under Kevin McKenna."

2010-11 MVC Preseason All-Conference Team
Name, School, Pos., Ht., Wt., Year, Hometown, High School
Kwadzo Ahelegbe, UNI, G, 6-2, 213, Sr., Oakdale (Minn.) Tartan High
Kenny Lawson Jr., Creighton, C, 6-9, 250, Sr., Oceanside (Calif.) Vista High
Sam Maniscalco, Bradley, G, 6-0, 175, Sr., Chicago (Ill.) St. Patrick High
Toure’ Murry, Wichita State, G, 6-5, 197, Jr., Houston (Texas) Klein Forest High
Kyle Weems, Missouri State, F, 6-6, 232, Jr., Topeka (Kan.) Highland Park High

Honorable Mention: Taylor Brown, Bradley; J.T. Durley, Wichita State; Adam Leonard, Missouri
State; Colt Ryan, Evansville; Seth VanDeest, Drake; Andrew Warren, Bradley.
Preseason Player of the Year -- Kenny Lawson Jr., Creighton

Here's their track record......
"Pollsters have accurately predicted the league’s regular-season champ only 12 times out of 26 since 1985-86" -- but two of those early years, 1985-86, 1987-88, and 1995-96 were made easy by Jim Les, Hersey Hawkins, AP, and the rest of the Braves!

The fall signing period for schools to obtain signed Letters of Intent begins Wednesday morning, November 10, just two weeks away..

Here's a list of who each Valley school might be expecting letters from...
If I have left anyone off, PM me...

Here's an interview with ex-Bradley assistant coach Tony Barone...not much about college basketball..

Yet another of the almost infinite reports detailing how much most state schools' athletic programs and facilities are being funded by general funds, taxpayer and state funds, and all kinds of other sources, even foundation giving that represents monies people gave in good faith thinking their money was being used for academics and student benefits...
so -- please, let's not use the haggard old lie that athletic departments and facilities are self-supported or paid for by private funds!!
the ISU folks seem to recite this mantra in their sleep and appear to actually believe it!!
http://www.news-leader.com/article/20101024/NEWS01/10240386/Athletics-funding-a-question-of-priorities%3Cbr

This article is just one of at least 20-30 that have shown recently that those claims of self-funding are lies..

MORE on BU's scrimmage, and some other funny stories...

The 2010-2011 college basketball season is underway -- and the intra-squad scrimmage was most fans' first chance to see this year's Bradley team. Unfortunately several minor injuries kept a few of the players inactive -- and I suspect they will be saved for when the games matter.

But check here to see a more thorough review of the Red-White scrimmage...
http://bubravesblogger.blogspot.com/2010/10/observations-from-red-white-game.html

Here's another blogger's views....
http://basketballbeerworld.blogspot.com/

And of course there's good coverage on BradleyFans.com...
http://www.bradleyfans.com/vb/showthread.php?t=16550

And good coverage on bubraves.com...
http://www.bradleybraves.com//ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=3400&ATCLID=205018058

And all the stats as provided by a very good stat crew Sunday night!
https://admin.xosn.com/pdf8/718848.pdf?SPSID=25972&SPID=1499&KEY=DKGUEKFKVUAHVEU.20101025013024&DB_ACCOUNT_TYPE=AGENT&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=3400

And even some reporting by Dave Reynolds...
http://www.pjstar.com/news/x1273024036/Braves-scrubbing-away-the-rust

But -- don't look for anything at all on any other message boards, even one that ostensibly claims to be about Bradley sports...
as of this morning the only thread discussing it elsewhere had no replies and only about 30 views....but you can bet if something negative had happened it would have been a hotter topic...

Here's an interesting report on ISU basketball, and if you can believe what the reporter says, then it either documents an obvious NCAA violation...or it shows how faulty at math anyone from ISU is...

Here's the quote...
"NCAA Rules allow teams to practice prior to the formal start of the season for just two hours a week during the summer.
Jankovich said he and his coaches broke that down into five intense 40 minute-sessions to help get played prepped."

http://illinoisreporter.com/news/?p=593

Hmmm...earth to Jank or author Steve Robinson!!!!
Five sessions of 40 minutes each would be 200 minutes, way MORE than the 120 minutes that comprise two hours!
Two hours do NOT equal 200 minutes!!! And an hour is NOT 100 minutes.
BTW -- they fail to mention how the "boot camps" each of the past several years at ISU have been associated with guys' knees being torn up repeatedly and with players going out and getting drunk and getting DUI's.

BTW -- one comment Tim Jankovich says in that column is something that sounds very positive for Bradley!

Jank says...
"We’ll have our hands full, potentially, every night,” Jankovich concluded. “We’ll be plenty challenged.” He said it has been the pattern that older MVC teams have dominated the league in recent years. The biggest challenge, Jankovich said, will be to try to beat those more dominant teams. He is hoping to his troops will find a way to buck a trend that says old teams succeed while young teams struggle."

Here's just a look at who might just be the OLDER TEAMS this season...
Here's how many years of experience each MVC team has...I am only counting the number of years each Valley team's expected starting five have -- and I list both total years (incl. redshirt years) and years played ..(I will count juco years, too although BU has only one from Dodie while most other schools have way more and they really aren't as impressive in the count)
I am not expecting any freshmen to start but if they do it even moreso reduces how "old" or experienced any team is...

Bradley -------- 16 years total, 14 years playing
Creighton ------ 10 years total, 9 years playing
Drake ---------- 9 years total, 7 years playing
Evansville ----- 11 years total, 10 years playing
ISU ------------ 11 years total, 11 years playing
InSU ----------- 15 years total, 13 years playing
Missouri State - 15 years total, 13 years playing
Northern Iowa -- 15 years total, 13 years playing
SIU ------------ 10 years total, 9 years playing
Wichita State -- 11 years total, 10 years playing

..so Jank must be talking about Bradley!!

Here's an interesting list of the most efficient players in college basketball...
there's a couple Valley players and a whole lot of other familiar names on the list including a lot of other mid-major players!
http://www.onlinesportsfanatic.com/?p=3214

Ex-Saluki Jamaal Tatum is currently with a German pro team but he does a blog on this site...check it out...but he's a little behind on his blogging...
http://www.probasketballoverseas.com/?blog=143&res=team

Yet another conference is sick and tired of a few of its members pulling an Illinois State or pulling a Jank and scheduling so soft and to be laughable.
The Sun Belt isn't a strong conference, but a few of their members like Western Kentucky and FAU have been scheduling tougher and they don't like being dragged down by their conference mates.

This article points out that once before they imposed these kinds of rules and guess what??
IT WORKED...they improved almost all the way up to the Top 10 conferences...
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=5724780

And for your laugh of the day, someone sent me this...
it's a guy on the ISU Redbird board claiming he's in the know about things at BU, and that Andrew Warren may not even be a starter this year for BU!
Then another guy who likes to talk as if he knows everything lines up right behind saying he believes it...
Hmm.....and I have to think these guys must have also pegged Osiris Eldridge as coming off the bench last year when he was a senior at ISU, right??

Everyone recall that Rivals/Yahoo has already done one MVC Preview...
http://www.bradleyfans.com/vb/showthread.php?t=16363

but now, a different Rivals writer does another MVC Preview...and it differs a little bit...

The first preview had Creighton at #2 and MSU at #3 in the order of finish...but this new guy has those two switched...
overall -- the new preview has some decent info...

Observations from the Red-White game

Got there early with some friends and family. Chili was good - a good deal to get all you wanted plus snacks/chips and drinks...
Also plenty of chance to talk with lots of other fans & some posters -- JeffSU, Patrick O'Brian, Da Coach, Mr. Coachdude, Big Mike, and quite a few others..

The women's game was 2 - 15 minute halves of a running clock...so the 30 minutes of running clock was the equivalent of only 20 minutes of play. Thus, the scoring was pretty awesome. The ladies finshed their Red-Black game with Black winning 51-39. They swapped some players at half but still they scored well!

The men likewise played one half with a running clock that ended Red 19 - White 17, then the 2nd half was a situational period of 10 minutes but clock stopped and bonus FT's shot...and that situational half was only 10 minutes, but the Red team started that period down 17-7...

But here were my assessments...
-a little sloppy but that was due in part to good defense, active hands, and a lot of tipped and stolen passes
-decent shooting...with five different players nailing 3's (Dodie Dunson, Jake Eastman, walk-on Aaron Ganson, Walt Lemon, and Dyricus)
-several quick blocked shots and I think the big guys played well, very active and finished well with the ball
-Sam Maniscalco, Taylor Brown, Will Egolf, and walk-on Jordan Brown all sat out with no risk of reinjuring their minor problems that are being rehabbed
-I thought defense overall was better than I expected for an early season exhibition

Here are my unofficial scoring totals..

#0 Charonn Woods missed a couple shots and was scoreless but did a decent job handling the ball

#1 Dodie Dunson looks to be in good shape, hit a "3" and a 2-pointer and I had him for a couple FT for 7 pts

#3 TB sat out

#4 Jake Eastman 4-4 on FT's, 9 pts total

#5 Sam Maniscalco sat out

#10 Aaron Ganson hit two 3's and a 2-pointer for 8 pts

#13 Jordan Brown sat out

#23 Andrew Davis, freshman, has a little way to go, had a nice blocked shot and a layup for 2 pts total

#24 Andrew Warren very active but didn't shoot a lot - 7 pts

#25 Walt Lemon, Jr. this guy will surprise and please many. He's all over, a great defender, quick and can finish with dunks.. he had 7 pts, and several steals

#32 Dyricus Simms-Edwards 3 pts, but did fine runing the point

#34 Milos Knezevic his shot was off but had had 4 pts

#41 Anthony Thompson did very well, he's much improved. One super-high flying blocked shot, a couple nice putbacks, 7 pts

#44 Jordan Prosser - also very active and he'll do fine in a backup role in frontcourt...8 pts and led with 6 rebs

#54 Will Egolf sat out

Overall -- like I said, pretty sloppy and a lot of likely starters sat out...
The guys with the most turnovers (Charonn Woods 4, Aaron Ganson 3, and Milos 3) are not the guys who will be handling the ball a lot in the season.
and some of the play just looked like everyone was being careful so nobody else got hurt...
If I felt anything really good it was that the guys who will likely be the subs like Lemon, Prosser, Thompson, and Jake all did very, very well...

The arena was beautiful and everything ran smoothly...the clocks, shot clocks, video...all did fine - no glitches..

and I disagree with sme who said the crowd was small...what I saw was that at all times many people were still just congregating in the mezzanine and in the Braves Club areas...
I talked with some who were in "authority" and all thought like I did that the crowd was 1500-2000...not at all bad for a late Sunday evening event that wasn't even a game. Agree that not many students were there -- but a whole lot of the old time BU fans were....

Another big Hit for Bruce Pearl

Now the player Bruce Pearl landed because of his cheating and lying, Jordan McRae has been ruled ineligible by NCAA. It's only fair, they flagrantly broke the rules, both the players and Pearl...they should both be penalized.
I hope the same goes for Selby & Craft the other two kids who blatantly violated the rules. it's time the NCAA mans up and nails the cheaters.

Update on Will Franklin, Cellus, Ryan Boatright, and more...

The never ending saga of recruit Ryan Boatright has yet another weird chapter..

As most recall, Boatright was still in elementary school when he was being recruited by Tim Floyd at USC and he was offered and accepted a scholarship there before ever entering high school.
The he reneged and withdrew his verbal and reopened recruitment. He leaned one way then the other and was said to be tied to several schools -- DePaul, Providence, even Illinois, etc...

Then finally, in front of cameras at a big press conference last Monday with his mother at his side, he verballed to Bob Huggins and West Virginia.
http://friarblog.com/post/1346341507/ryan-boatright-picks-hugs-over-keno

But - the very next day, Ryan Boatright, the #1 best PG in Class of 2011 and #51 player overall got a surprise.
Huggins then got another verbal from Jabari Hinds, a kid out of New York who is the #26 best PG in Class of 2011...Hinds was leaning to UConn but wanted to seek somewhere else to play given that UConn may get hit with sanctions.
Apparently this didn't set well with Boatright who does not appear to want any competition for playing time...

Boatright promptly then decommits from West Virginia and reopens his recruiting...
http://foxvalleysun.suntimes.com/2079965-419/boatright-east-virginia-west-aurora.html

His mother makes this statement this morning...
“He did decommit,” Ryan’s mother Tanesha said Friday night. “But we don’t have any comment right now. We are thinking about it and trying to accept it as a family.”

So now Ryan Boatright is said to be leaning to UConn....weird........

Here's a nice stat site to keep current on Marcellus Sommerville's stats...

Update on Will Franklin.......
Will Franklin has signed ...with Etoile du Sahel ...

Will played his first regular season game with his new team, and ES Sahel won 90-41 over ES Rades...
no stats avail. yet..

they just completed a quick three game tournament with ESS beating Al Kadhim of Kuwait 80-51, then beating Al Hikma of Lebanon 68-62,
but losing in the finals to Arriadh of Lebanon 71-63...again, no stats avail.

The team actually has a message board, but since the club has a football (soccer) team, almost all the discussion is about soccer..

A little update on Sunday's Red-White Scrimmage...
Just in case you can not make it by 6PM -- you can still catch most of the action...
"The Bradley men are expected to take the court at approximately 7 o'clock and
several of the players will address the crowd at the conclusion of the scrimmage."

If you ever needed evidence that even the folks in the know and the insiders believe that some schools get special treatment by the NCAA, here it is.
These are the words of Mississippi State coach Rick Stansbury...and he flatly states that EVERYBODY knows Kentucky gets special favorable treatment just because they are Kentucky.

"Stansbury..questioned whether Kentucky gets favorable treatment
because of its status as a traditional basketball power..
repeated that theme when asked about the Kanter case.

"Everybody across the landscape of college basketball
understands what that situation was," Stansbury said. "Everybody
is probably waiting to see (if) Kentucky gets something, is it because,
with Kentucky, something's maybe different than another school."

Yikes - just when you thought it couldn't get worse for Bruce Pearl!! .....Plus lots of BU, and Valley news!

Lies, lies, and damned lies...
You have got to read this letter sent to Bruce Pearl! It was sent when Bruce's lies were first in the TERMINATION!!...
IN OTHER WORDS, BRUCE PEARL WAS ACTUALLY FIRED back on September 9.
He is currently just working on a day to day basis but currently has no contract and no agreement.
http://www.wbir.com/pdf/102110_pearlnotice.pdf

Note the very strong wording!!

"This letter constitutes notice that the University of Tennessee is exercising its right to terminate your Employment Agreement ...
..you knowingly violated NCAA rules..
..you (knew and) admitted to (the recruits) and their families that (it was) a violation...and you asked that they not tell anyone either."
You failed to .. self-report...
You failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance...
and failed to protect the integrity of the NCAA's investigation..(by rehearsing and conspiring with your staff to lie and give false answers).."
..and calling the father of one of the recruits to alter his testimony...
"gave false and misleading statements to the NCAA..and falsely certified in writing.."

"Based on the facts described above, Chancellor Cheek and I have determined that you engaged in gross misconduct, including dishonesty and other other acts involving intolerable behavior..
the University is TERMINATING YOUR EMPLOYMENT AGREEMENT..."

Here's more -- just about everyone is astounded that Pearl is still coaching after these latest revelations...
http://www.tennessean.com/article/20101022/SPORTS0601/101021111/UT-terminates-Pearl-s-contract-but-keeps-coach

The Sporting News thinks this is all quite astounding that the University never bothered to mention all this stuff and it's only now being found out because people have pursued these documents via the Freedom of Information Act!
http://www.sportingnews.com/ncaa-basketball/feed/2010-09/vols-penalties

Pearl thinks this is all just a distraction..

Drake had their intrasquad scrimmage last night...
http://www.godrakebulldogs.com//ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=15700&ATCLID=205016578

In the Blue-White game.... a 16-minute scrimmage with two 8-minute halves....
Here are scoring totals....
Starters are marked with a *.(some players switched and played on both teams)
numbers separated by a slash are 1st half/2nd half totals

Blue Team 28 points
*Clarke 7
Alexander 3/0
*Wedel 6
*Wiseler 2
Parker 2
*Rice 3/2
Simons 3/5
*VanDeest 2

White Team 20 points
*Hawley 9
*Jeffers 2/0
*Woods 0
Newton 0
*Smith 0/0
Whitaker 0/0
*Uhlenhopp 2

Springfield's Karl Madison was not dressed..note Champaign's Rayvonte Rice had only 5 pts.

Here's more of one observer's comments...

"While watching all the guys making acrobatic dunks in warm-ups, it was obvious this team has tons of athleticism. Offensively, they look like they should depend on that athleticism to make things happen, instead of the pass it around and shoot when the defense leaves a guy open offense they've used in the past.
Things can change, but Blue's starters should be the favorites to start in game one. It was hard to tell what the rotations will look like behind them, though.

The play looked pretty ragged, but it's day 6 of practice
Clarke looked solid as a Blue starter. Hawley played hard on the lesser White team, and did some nice things offensively once the teams evened out a little after half. Rice shot too many 3's considering how strong he is, but nobody played inside much. Wiseler looked pretty good for a guy who tore his achilles about 10 weeks ago, and looked close to 100% physically."

Here's an incredibly great blog piece on Wichita State...whoa, would love to have this kind of coverage on Bradley...

Note Ellis is talking redshirt...David Kyles in the doghouse...and coach Gregg Marshall publicly and vocally a bit negative on certain players..

Creighton has a ton of nice coverage...check it out -- need I say more??
.................
Doug McDermott -- they say he's added 20 lbs? Just how skinny was the guy?

Even more...

And a lot of Creighton fans were not pleased with some of the things that happened when their message board changed over to a Rivals board...
There was bickering, the fan base got split when they made part of the board a pay site and excluded some fans..and there are still arguments.
So some of their fans have started up another message board...seems like a really good one -- one of the better boards I have seen at the mid-major level -- certainly one of the best in the Valley. Good luck to them.....

Carlos Boozer -- how did he really break his hand? - and a few other tidbits...

Here's just a few opinions -- you decide......

The injury was said to be a fractured 5th metacarpal bone...which is commonly known as a boxer's fracture. Of course the bone can break other ways, but far and away it MOST COMMONLY gets broken when someone punches something that's harder than expected. A few years ago, Illinois' Brian Randle missed the whole Final Four season after the exact same 5th metacarpal injury he got from punching the padding under the basket after he missed a shot in practice. Why do people mindlessly ignore the obvious....people just don't get this kind of break falling over their gym bag!!

But Boozer says he fell or injured his hand at home, although his story seemed to be vague and maybe changing a bit...

Here's one guy posting on a Chicago message board saying he knows for a fact that Boozer was injured punching someone in a late night bar brawl!
http://forums.chicagohoops.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=24168

Others are saying essentially the same thing...

Here's a little evidence that big men -- no matter how obscure and no matter how low their averages, if they just hold out long enough, offers will, and sometimes good offers...
we just saw where SIU landed verbals from two pretty obscure big guys -- one that is 6-11...(but 32 lbs skinnier even than Anthony Thompson!)- got zero offers out of high school and hasn't played a single game since then...
http://www.bradleyfans.com/vb/showthread.php?t=16490

Georgia just got a verbal from a juco big man who averages an incredibly low 3.7 ppg and 3.5 rpg!! These numbers make guys like IU's Bawa Muniru and Tijan Jobe look like Kareem Abdul Jabbar by comparison!
http://jucojunction.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1141588

Here's one more....6-10 Tim Thomas - a juco kid averaging just 7 ppg, 5 rpg gets an offer and verbals to Pacific!

A couple followups from yesterday...
Apparently Robbie Hummel and his family are not
happy with the Purdue orthopedic surgeon who did his knee the first time...
there's several mentions that they are picking someone else this time around...
someone should tell them about Will Egolf's guys right here in Peoria!!
(definitely stay away from the guys who work on the ISU players, because their knee problems like Bobby Hill & Mike Vandello never get better and ultimately become career ending!)

Also, Seton Hall's Herb Pope, who it was reported yesterday had signed with a European pro team, apparently hasn't mentioned it at all to his coach or team and is still at Seton Hall attending classes.
In fact at yesterday's Big East Media Day -- the representatives of Seton Hall and coaching staff were all totally befuddled and knew nothing of it...
http://thehoopsreport.com/article.aspx?id=580

They're at it again...
The notorious Bradley haters and BU-bashers...it's not even worth mentioning except for how comical they look.
I am told someone has started yet another discussion trying to slam BU and claim someone at BU has like, maybe, a DUI??
Funny -- I know nothing of it and of course nobody's given any evidence or any link.
(and you can't be sure they won't either)
I always give links to prove what I say and reference, but as seen in most trollers' or flamers' posts there's never any proof or evidence or links...
remember this one??
http://www.pjstarforums.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=81053

That one was almost two months ago -- made some ridiculous and false accusation, and yet now it's clear that was a lie also...just like the buyout threads and some of these recent idiotic rants....
and these guys keep pretending to be Bradley fans, while stooping to the lowest levels to attack decent people.

I'll repeat it for the 1000th time and nobody's come close to challenging it yet..
but there has NEVER been a rostered Bradley basketball player get a DUI -- NEVER...
It has happened plenty of times at ISU, SIU, where the DUI's are also only 18 & 19 years old, and even U of I where the DUI's are accompanied by nearly murdering their own teammates..
Some of their DUI's were kept under wraps and the ones at ISU on Levi Dyer and Brandon Sampay were not only found and disclosed by the people on the message boards (embarrassing the newspaper guys), but the message boards also proved that Jank was a liar when he claimed those violator were going to be disciplined and "immediately and completely suspended" -- all the while allowing them to play and practice without missing even a single day!
Ryan Hare literally STARTED a game the same day he was in court for his DUI!
Sure -- maybe some day it might happen at Bradley -- kids are kids...
I don't hold it against the kids -- only against the hypocritical fans who act it only happens at BU when it never does...and against the hypocritical coaches who talk tough with discipline but who act far differently.
But it's funny to see the bashers try so hard to paint Bradley with the same brush ISU and other schools are painted with....they can't.
BU hasn't had any DUI's and it ain't happening now, either...
still waiting for that link you seem to conveniently forget...

The hits keep coming for Bruce Pearl..and summary of the bad things that have happened to Purdue's Robbie Hummel

Yet another hit and maybe more to come for Tennessee's Bruce Pearl...
Ben McLemore, a Top 25 recruit, 5-Star rated that Pearl had pursued vigorously, has canceled his visit to Tennessee over the weekend and dropped Tennessee from his list -- and stories emerging say he is convinced Bruce Pearl isn't going to be there much longer...or there could be some serious sanctions coming...so he just doesn't want to chance going to a school that he'll regret...
This is gonna steamroll and really hurt Tennessee's ability to recruit.

Here's the news on Purdue's star forward, Robbie Hummel. Some of the info being made known recently is controversial and one of the links below has already been removed as to avoid arguments, but I will present the facts as they are and allow the reader to draw his own conclusions.

Purdue's Robbie Hummel just tore his right ACL for a second time. This is quite unusual and here is some commentary about 2nd ACL tears by Dr. Brian Cole...one of the world's leading expert in knee reconstruction.

This recent article quotes renowned orthopedic specialist Dr. Brian Cole, who I have met several times and who operated on one of my own children, and who is also the long time Chicago Bulls team doctor as well as Chicago White Sox team doctor..
http://www.nwitimes.com/sports/basketball/college/purdue-university/article_04a20f9a-b549-5bd3-bfa2-0f32966ac5e8.html

Cole, by the way, literally "wrote the book" on many of these types of knee injuries and their repair...
http://books.google.com/books?id=Ptp_2HlZ1-QC&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q&f=false
http://books.google.com/books?id=Ptp_2HlZ1-QC&printsec=frontcover&dq=%22joint+reconstruction%22+and+%22cole%22&hl=en&ei=1Bm_TL_yAsrBnAf01I2KDg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCsQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q&f=false
http://books.google.com/books?id=W6z8508TSfAC&printsec=frontcover&dq=%22textbook+of+arthroscopy%22+and+%22cole%22&hl=en&ei=mhm_TPzKB4SnnAfi4vGJDg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CDMQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q&f=false

Only about one in every 40 to 50 men who tear their ACL ever do it again after it's been surgically reconstructed, but lately it's been happening more.
Because of the type of wear and tear and injury, virtually every example of repeat ACL tear is in either a woman basketball player or a men's football player.
Exhaustive search seems to turn up zero previous men basketball players who have re-torn the same ACL twice and ever made it back to be able to play at any significant level. These facts are ominous news for Hummel....

BUT -- there's even a little more brewing controversy about this re-injury for Robbie Hummel -- just to recap, here's a timeline of what has happened to Purdue's Robbie Hummel...

-Robbie Hummel's first knee injury is a complete rupture (tear) of his right ACL in a game vs. Minnesota on Feb. 24, 2010

-March 8, 2010 - Hummel undergoes reconstructive surgery on his torn ACL by Dr. Donald Shelbourne, a well known knee specialist in Indianapolis, IN.

-May 27, 2010 - in an effort to vigorously rehab his knee over a relatively short time span, hoping to be ready for the start of the season in fall, Hummel re-injures his surgically repaired knee, but very little gets said about it...
The re-injury definitely pushes him back on the progress scale and his rehab kinda starts over after a rest period.
http://blogs.post-trib.com/osipoff/2010/05/some-purdue-basketball-items-i.html
http://www.jconline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?category=PluckPersona&U=5da7dfb61b584f4a83ea05a31ed1e57c&plckPersonaPage=BlogViewPost&plckUserId=5da7dfb61b584f4a83ea05a31ed1e57c&plckPostId=Blog%3a5da7dfb61b584f4a83ea05a31ed1e57cPost%3add750f37-be8a-4ac1-8ca3-1de45fa0b513&plckController=PersonaBlog&plckScript=personaScript&plckElementId=personaDest

-Then in the fall of 2010 -- everyone said that despite a few setbacks, Hummel was going to try to get fully cleared and practicing by the opening day of practice, Oct. 15.
This seemed very optimistic given that most ACL reconstructions take a bare minimum of 4-6 months before full and vigorous athletic activity should take place...and many specialists even say that's too fast, and that it should be more like 6-8 or even 8-12 months.
Oct. 15 only 7 months downstream from his repair surgery...and barely four months from being cleared after his setback in the summer.

It has been reported that Hummel was fully cleared for any and all action on Oct. 1, 2010 by Dr. Shelbourne...
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/campusrivalry/post/2010/10/purdues-robbie-hummel-cleared-to-return-to-action/1
http://bradleyfans.com/vb/showpost.php?p=183759&postcount=26

...although he was pretty worried about doing too much too soon!
"one of the biggest concerns with his rehab was that he would try to do too much too soon"
http://beyondthearc.nbcsports.com/2010/10/hummel-moving-pretty-good-on-healthy-knee.php
http://blogs.post-trib.com/osipoff/2010/05/some-purdue-basketball-items-i.html

-October 16, 2010 - literally the very first practice of the season for the team and the very first time Hummel practiced on his surgically repaired knee...
...Robbie Hummel suffers another complete tear of his ACL in preseason practice.
This is very unfortunate and now Hummel will undergo a much more difficult repeat reconstruction, and I hope he defies the odds and makes a great comeback!
http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/ncb/news/story?id=5691032

BUT -- there are people raising the question -- Did he come back too soon?? You decide..
"Hummel tore his ACL in the second drill of the very first practice of the season. (after being cleared fully)"

Unfortuntely there's not one single known college athlete who has ever come back and has a notable career or success after completely tearing the same ACL TWICE...
but Purdue is snakebitten in this regard, since their football team's starting quarterback also JUST tore his same ACL for a 2nd time after being repaired two years earlier...
http://purdue.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1133164
http://ncaafootball.fanhouse.com/2010/09/30/robert-marve-purdue-quarterback-out-for-season-with-torn-acl/

and - take this FWIW -- the surgeon, Dr. Shelbourne..
"was recently fired by the Indiana Pacers and the Indiana Colts"...and his techniques have come under question...
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:PEF7MTRq_I8J:bleacherreport.com/articles/494774-robbie-hummels-acl-tear-leaves-purdue-answering-100-million-questions+%22shelbourne%22+and+%22marve%22&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

And even Dr. Shelbourne's own words in this interview (see link below) say he really feels a player should NOT come back until 4-6 months after they are back on the floor practicing!
Note that Hummel only got back on the floor at the end of May, but even then re-injured his knee (see above) -- so his start time for this 4-6 months would have really been July, so clearing the guy fully just 4 months later really raises questions if that timetable violated Dr. Shelbourne's own guidelines..
Also, in this interview, he somewhat condemns trying to get the athletes back TOO SOON, which is, unfortunately, what might have happened here...

More news on Bruce Pearl's cheating - now it's proven he's cheated and violated NCAA rules at four different schools - PLUS shoe news!

*** First - a reminder of the Chat Session with BU's Athletic Director Dr. Michael Cross --
it's at NOON on Thursday.......note the early time and set aside the time slot!!
http://twitter.com/#!/xb7/status/27852051957

Now the Bruce Pearl cheating news of the morning......
Maybe some people don't care, but there can't be many remaining that still support this slimebag...

This is a world record...now it's been proven that Bruce Pearl has cheated at FOUR different schools -- all four of the past four schools he's been at!!
....and to think there were people even up to just a few weeks ago saying Bruce Pearl is a good coach and that he is not a cheater...

Of course we know now that the NCAA also implicated Pearl in some of the cheating back in the 1980's with Deon Thomas when Pearl tried to rat on University of Illinois with lies that were later proven to be made up.

Then it's all over the news how he has been cheating at Tennessee since he got there and now even caught lying to NCAA investigators about it!!!

Then even tho some tried to hide it, it's now known he also cheated with illegal recruiting and tampering with players under scholarship elsewhere while he was at Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/campusrivalry/post/2010/10/report-bruce-pearl-invited-recruit-to-his-home-while-at-wis-milwaukee/1
http://msn.foxsports.com/collegebasketball/story/Wisconsin-Milwaukee-says-Bruce-Pearl-violated-NCAA-rules-in-2004-100410

So, that's THREE major cheating issues at THREE different schools....
OK -- so the big question....what's the 4th school.......

Well it doesn't take a genius to figure it out...he's only been at four different schools since he ratted on Illinois...Iowa, UW-M, Tennessee, and of course University of Southern Indiana.
It was at USI that he rebuilt his reputation by winning...but now we have proof that maybe he was winning there only because he cheated there as well....
read it and weep, Pearl fans...

The press in Tennessee now proves Pearl was cheating at USI as far back as 1992!!!
Whoa...that's the very first year he was there at Southern Indiana...
and Pearl stayed at USI all the way through the 2000-2001 season before moving on to cheat at UW-M.

So how did Pearl rack up all those good seasons at USI?? Well, likely because he cheated there also...and even the University of Southern Indiana is saying so...
They are only revealing a couple of impermissible benefits violations and use of ineligible players, but as time goes, on we'll see more evidence...it's just a matter of time as has been the pattern with Pearl all along.
As I said -- not many Pearl defenders left any more...wonder why??

Here's Reebok's new John Wall Signature shoe..the first product coming from a $25 million shoe deal between Reebok & John Wall..
Almost every single comment thus far from every observer is that they look hideous...but even worse...what's Reebok trying to portray??

A Spiderman effect in beige??
They are supposed to be "Gold" but they look like vomit-color tan or beige...
Maybe John Wall fans will be loyal enough to buy anything they shove at them or anything this horrid and ugly, but nobody else is gonna go for these....thus they'll be flops!
Makes you wonder just who did they test market these on?? Color blind people??
http://www.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/22748484/25324241

Anyway -- they're called John Wall Signature shoes..but nowhere on the entire freaking shoe is either John Wall's name or anything resembling his signature..
http://dimemag.com/2010/10/reebok-zigtech-slash-limited-edition-gold-rush-colorway/

Just read some of the "Reader Comments"...virtually everyone says they are hideous and ugly!!

And, it only took 24 hours after the news and photos of this shoe were released by Reebok, for the business world to say that Reebok has "bricked" this one...
http://www.businessinsider.com/reebok-butchers-its-big-return-to-basketball-2010-10

This might be the Chinese footwear market's and Evan Turner's big opening to take over 2nd place in the shoe world behind Nike...Reebok has shot itself in the foot on this ugly product!

Speaking of shoes...is this a GREAT marketing strategy or what???

this company had struck GOLD!!!

Check out this headline...

"NBA Bans Basketball Shoes by Athletic Propulsion Labs Based on League Rule against "Undue Competitive Advantage" That Increases a Player's Vertical Leap"

Now everyone will want this shoe if it is so good that it's banned by the NBA because players wearing it get an unfair advantage!!!

Here's more of what the story says...

"LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--For the first time in its 64-year history, the National Basketball Association (NBA) has banned a new line of shoes based on the league’s rule against an “unfair competitive advantage” that increases a player’s vertical leap.
..No professional player will be allowed to wear the product in games for the upcoming 2010-2011 NBA season.

“We were not exactly shocked to hear the NBA chose to ban our shoes”..
Athletic Propulsion Labs (APL) was notified by a senior NBA official who stated,
...Retailing for $300, the shoes continue to be sold primarily through APL’s website (www.athleticpropulsionlabs.com), and the company is exploring a potential expansion into select athletic footwear and sporting goods retailers.

Check out their web site...

the front page of that site brags...
"BANNED BY THE NBA" -- buy now!!

#13 in the all time list of mid-majors and Legacy countdown is Dayton....so Bradley's ahead of Dayton as well!!
Where are those people claiming we should be like Dayton or should have hired the guy Dayton has as coach??
This guy doing the rating definitely isn't much of a Bradley fan but he's being forced to state the obvious...that BU is among the top dozen or so non-BCS programs in the nation!! It's about the only sensible and sane thing among the guy's recent rants...

The guy doing the mid-major countdown of the BEST mid-major programs ** has counted all the way down to #13...and Bradley is still yet to come!!
He had ISU at #46
Drake at #39
Missouri State at #21
Creighton at #20
Wichita State at #15
and today SIU at #14 is revealed...

Only BU and UNI from the Valley are still left to be revealed, so that means Bradley is being rated even by this guy who seems to have little respect for Bradley..
...as one of the TOP TWO programs in the Valley, a mid-major that obviously ranks inside the TOP 10-15 non-BCS schools in regards to their "legacy", and a team that obviously deserves a whole lot more respect than some people seem to be giving...

If they are better than 250 of the 263 mid-major programs that are being considered, then I'd say it's time to put the anti-BU stuff to rest!
** He is considering just the facts and criteria "based on their performance over the course of" the last six years....pretty much the Jim Les era...
'Nuff said........

Surprise, the writer doing the review of Jay Leno at the Bradley homecoming seems to have had a whole lot more negative to say than positive...

Here's an interesting topic....the state of Virginia publishes all the salaries of the people who are drawing salary from the state and receiving taxpayer money as their salaries...
http://www2.timesdispatch.com/news/virginia-politics/2010/oct/17/payy17-ar-567956/

Two thoughts -- this is just another nail in the coffin of those who say the enormous salaries of their coaches at the public, taxpayer funded institutions are covered by private funds! How many times do we hear someone claiming their state university pays all their athletic department costs including coaches' salaries with either private funds or with money that constitutes "self-support".
Again, I say baloney -- if the money came from private sources, then it wouldn't be in this report...and if you read you find that is indeed the case...
some comes from private sources, but the private amounts are the extreme small minority!!

But the biggest mind-blower -- is how the HEYYYY can anyone expect the government to balance their budget and be responsible with spending like this!!
"College and university staff and administration are by far the highest earners on the state payroll...
..men's football and basketball coaches..

Gov. Bob McDonnell is tied with others for 711th on the list, with a salary of $175,000..
..more than 4,800 state employees (of 92,924 total state employees) ..earned $100,000 or more in base salary in 2010.."

Roughly one out of every 18 state employees therefore is hauling down over $100K!!
and this doesn't even consider all the highly paid coaches, since some are considered "local employees" such as the $2.1 million paid to Virginia Tech's football coach!

but Jim Larranaga's salary at state school George Mason University, all $525,000 comes directly from state coffers and out of the taxpayers' pockets!!
