News around the Valley

The biggest news in my opinion is this.............
http://twitter.com/CoachJimLes/status/4486990018

Every BU player is now fully cleared for any activity...no present health problems....
even Will and Andrew are essentially 100% and ready to go, so can we have a few days off from the Chicken Little's??

The next biggest news is the unfortunate injury to Bobby Hill of ISU. The details are well documented........
http://bradleyfans.com/vb/showthread.php?p=141189#post141189

but how will this affect their depth?? Some were figuring that ISU would use Bobby Hill as a starter....
They have 3 guys who are almost certainly to be starters - Eldridge, Dinma, Phillips - but the rest of the rotation is up for grabs as there are really just way too many untested players to know who will fill those spots yet.

First....for Bobby Hill, in regards to eligibility, this is his 4th year and next year will be his 5th year. So he may only have one year of eligibility remaining...but could get a 6th year by special appeal/waiver from NCAA..but very few cases qualify.

The other guys who'll play the guard and wing spots are.... Clark, Ekey, Upshaw, Carmichael, Lewis, Kellen, A. Hill, Johnson, Rubin, and possibly Jeremy Robinson (also coming off knee surgery), plus a few walk ons.

.... five of them are freshmen (Clark, Ekey, Upshaw, Johnson, Carmichael) who haven't ever played a minute of D1 ball, one is a D2 juco (Lewis) who hasn't played a minute of D1 ball, and two (Thornton, Robinson) are sophomores, neither of whom played even 5 minutes a game last year, and both averaged less than 1 ppg. Rubin is really a backup PG, so -- their total depth at the spot Bobby Hill plays amounts to a list of players who have never started a game at ISU before, their total minutes played is 172 minutes (120 for Thornton, 50 for J-Rob), and their cumulative (D-I) scoring average for all 7 players is 1.6 ppg (0.8 ppg for both Thornton, and Robinson), and 2.0 rpg.

If I had to guess who will be the other two ISU starters, I think they'll come from this list....
SG/wing - Austin Hill, Johnson, Lewis, Clark
PG/combo guard - Rubin, TJ?

--First...that'll be a small lineup as only Dinma looks to be a starter over 6-3....unless they want to use Carmichael or Robinson, and I can't see it...

--then it also means that their 4th through 8-9th roster/rotation spots, which last season accounted for 3400 of their total 7000 minutes played....will be manned by very inexperienced players.

So.... are the Redbirds going to man 1/2 of their minutes played with "D-I virgins" as one local reporter calls them?
In the season that BU got lambasted for having too many D-I virgins, the Braves went with 4 D-I "virgins (David Collins, Theron Wilson, Rashad Austin, Tyrone Cole-Scott).
One (Wilson) was a superb producer, while he AND the other three accounted for WELL UNDER 2000 total playing minutes, a drastically smaller amount of playing minutes than ISU is going to have to fill this season with their D-I virgins...and yet Bradley still got ripped in the press for the poor recruiting that led to using so many D-I virgins and inexperienced players who were wanting and expecting decent laying time!!
Will we see similar rips this season aimed at the Redbirds? Time will tell.

(oddly, when the PJ Star writer lambasted the Braves for using too many D-I virgins, the minutes totalled less than 2000 played by the newbies, yet this past season with Dodie, CRob, Norris, Taylor Brown, and Eddren all logging big minutes, our D-I virgins & jucos totalled almost 4000 minutes, yet we didn't hear a thing about too many virgins in 2008-2009. ??)

Donivine Stewart mention...I hear that BU is still OK with Stewart..

YahooSports preseason issue is out, I will try to get to a copy and give a wrap on it... ;)
Valleytalk still down...days and days on end...
Last time this happened, the guy who runs it from a distance said it was hacked...hardly a surprise when they allow such horrid and hateful rants there from infantile posters whose only joy seems to be attacking fans from other teams and even fans from their own claimed team.
I never go there, nothing useful, but it's dying the same death as one other wasteland of a message board that's being kept afloat by one or two flamers.

Emerging reports that just a week before his 21st birthday, one of the SIU players may have gotten a DUI....here is the Salukitalk discussion about it...
http://www.salukitalk.net/st/viewtopic.php?t=29186&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=42

...then the coach appears to have banned all the players from any local drinking establishment...interesting! Wow, can you imagine the local financial impact had that happened in Bloomington?? ;)

Yet another shady "package deal" where a coach hires a special assistant of an extra assistant for a made-up spot just to land more top recruits.
http://bradleyfans.com/vb/showthread.php?p=141161#post141161

another reason why recruiting 8th graders has a down side...
Billy Gillispie went after and landed a verbal from Dakota Euton (among others) while the kid was still an 8th grader...but since then, not only has Gillispie been fired at Kentucky, and new coach Calipari doesn't want Euton, and on top of that, the kid's stock has taken a dive as he's fail to "pan out". So now it looks like the kid's gonna go from being a Top-10 nationally ranked UK recruit to likely ending up at a low-mid-major like Eastern kentucky.

ISU's Tim Jankovich and his scheduling philosophy

ISU's non-conference schedule is horrid...it is so terribly weak, that one cannot possibly surmise that it just accidentally or inadvertently happened that way.
Plus, it was equally as weak last year also, so it is becoming such a pattern, that one has to wonder how and why does ISU do this....or more accurately...why does Tim Jankovich does this.
It's an embarrassment for the school, for the fans, and a horrible embarrassment for the Missouri Valley Conference.
But there is proof that it is actually designed this way...based on Tim Jankovich's long held scheduling philosophy!

Even the ISU fans have abandoned any idea of defending this horrid schedule. Last year's schedule actually got a fair amount of NEGATIVE national publicity, since ISU was winning well over 20 games against the soft schedule full of patsies, and indeed it did come back to hurt them, as the are the only team in history to have back to back seasons of 24 and 25 wins and not get any consideration for an at large bid.
Their schedule was the single factor that kept them OUT of the NCAA!

But how and why does ISU do this to itself, it's fans, and to the MVC?

I think I have some answers, and it is being discussed a little even by the ISU fans. Much of the answers are revealed in this column that was written back in March of 2007...

These words were uttered 2 1/2 years ago when Jank was first hired, but they pretty clearly reveal that Jankovich has long held a philosophy of wanting to avoid playing anyone tough if you don't have to. He even unilaterally quit a D-I head coaching job and preferred to coach at a junior college instead of facing tough opponents and risk actually taking losses on his career record.
http://pantagraph.com/sports/college/illinois-state/article_17dd7b7d-c99f-5971-a5ed-0080f73390fa.html

Normally, every coach wants to play the toughest opponents possible, to play "up" instead of "down". But this is clearly NOT Tim Jankovich's philosophy....Jank's philosophy is to seek out the softest easiest opponents and try to rack up the most wins possible regardless of how weak the schedule was! If forced to play tough opponents, and face the possibility of actually losing more than winning, this scares Jank. It caused him to bolt a perfectly good D-I head coaching job and seek out a far lesser job coaching at a junior college!

Read what Jankovich says about his early coaching career....
Back in 1993 he says this....
"Jankovich admitted he would have taken any head coaching job in 1993. He was Colorado
State's associate head coach when he was named at North Texas and inherited a 5-22 squad."

so Jank wasn't selective at all...he'd have taken ANY head coaching job...those are his own words!

Then Jank has a couple decent years, but in such a weak conference, that hardly anyone noticed...
"They (North Texas) were 287 of 301 on the (RPI) computer. Basically, I took the worst team in America short of 13," he said. "I looked at it and I was really, really young and ambitious. I didn't think it through like this situation. When you're 31 or 32 you think, 'I don't need anything. Just get a job.' But it was still a good decision because I looked at it as I could get them to the top of the league fast."North Texas was in the Southland Conference, which Jankovich said ranked 27th of 31 leagues in the country. He got North Texas to the Southland Tournament championship game two of his first three years. However, the athletic director who hired Jankovich left, and North Texas was making a move to play Division I-A football."

So he just wanted a job where he could get "to the top of the league fast".
But now.....North Texas was going to MOVE UP and play in a tougher conference and against MUCH tougher opponents...and Jank suddenly didn't want that and chickened out...read this...

"North Texas also moved to the tougher Big West Conference."We went from the 27th league to the 12th. It would be like Illinois State moving to the Eastern Division of the NBA," Jankovich said. "You have this team in the Southland, and now you're playing in the 12th league. That's fine, but we didn't have any money to do this."That's not the job I took."So, Jankovich left after the 1996-97 season with a 53-57 record."

" Jankovich walked away from North Texas also with three years left on his pact.
"I thought (staying) was career suicide at that time," Jankovich said."

So Jank had a good D-I head coaching job and ran from it because the schedule was going to get harder, and they'd even have to play guarantee games, huh??

Jank went 9-9, then 9-9, then 12-6 when he had Texas State in the terribly weak Southland Conference.
THEN, when they moved to the Big West (a much tougher conference), in the FIRST season, he went 6-10 (the only season he stayed after the team's move), and then up and quit because "that's not the job I took"!!

He objected to a tougher schedule being foisted upon him against his wishes!

So I think this reveals a whole lot about why he hides from tough opponents, and why he favors a really soft non-conference schedule. I think it helps explain the horrid ISU schedule and why it looks like this year after year....
It is no accident...it is his basic philosophy....stay away from strong opponents, don't do guarantee games, and try to rack up easy wins in preference to actually facing a good schedule.
I can't see it any other way...those are Tim Jankovich's own words...and the facts 2 1/2 years later, looking at the ISU schedules, seems to bear this out....

Even on ISU fan posts this about Janovich's scheduling philosophy...
"It is better to try and fail, than to fail to try."

One more comment....it isn't hard to notice how incredibly bad and weak those non-conference opponents are...but just in case you ask why did ISU go out and seek to bring in teams like SEMO, Grambling and Central Michigan University in to Redbird Arena on 12/05/09...then check this out...

Grambling is going to be devastated, and so is SEMO......they were hit with two sets of NCAA sanctions and their team is destroyed!
Then.......of all the years to play CMU, this is a real aberration...
Of course they're weak every year, but they should be especially and incredibly weak this year...
they've essentiall had to clean house...
They have had academic and legal issues and FIVE of their better players have been dismissed.
Their team is gutted this year and will likely have one of their worst years ever...they should be be a 300+ RPI team. But Jank likely would have known that, so you have to wonmder if that was actually an appealing feature....that he could bring them in and catch then when they were as soft as ever.
http://www.cm-life.com/2009/09/28/mens-basketball-ex-player-sentenced-to-jail-transfers/

So the teams they're bringing in are an amazing set of hand picked, crippled teams that even their JV ought to be able to rack up a win against!

Some Valley Topics and a Few New Names

Ex-Creighton Bluejay, Anthony Tolliver has been signed to the Miami Heat roster...
".. for training camp, which opens Monday at AmericanAirlines Arena.Tolliver, 6-9, went undrafted out of Creighton in 2007, splitting 2007-08 between the NBA Development League and the German League. He appeared in 19 games last season .."

An interesting tweet seen that was posted late Friday night, actually at 2AM on Saturday...by an ex-basketball player/acquaintance...
Doesn't ISU have rules? Would the coach be happy if his players are out in the bars 'til 2AM in downtown Bloomington?
(** caution - the language this guy uses on his twitter is a little out of the mainstream, if you know what I mean.)

Here's something that always amazes me.....the head coach of a major school telling people who his starters are going to be MORE than a month ahead of the start of the season!!
This is, in my opinion, a very bad thing to do....
it makes the guys named perhaps a little more lazy - knowing they don't have to work all that hard since they've already been anointed a starter. Wouldn't you want your kids working hard as if they ALL had to earn those starting spots??

Second..it would tend to be demoralizing to those other kids, because now they know they have no chance of starting no matter what they do in tryouts or practice.
I just think it's a very bad thing for a coach to say....to name your starters any time before the season starts!!

The fans on the SIU board have been polled and 72% say yes to the Salukis going after Diamond Taylor who was booted at Wisconsin before he ever played a game, because of his arrest.
http://www.salukitalk.net/st/viewtopic.php?t=29138

Oddly, some want to boot Ryan Hare to free up a scholarship to be able to land Diamond Taylor. (The major part of all the Ryan Hare threads have already been axed or locked so no more discussion is being allowed). Personally, I think each of these kids, after the appropriate discipline, should get additional chances...but I just don't see booting Hare in exchange for Taylor.
BTW - Hare is alleged to already have been set to serve 3 or more games' of a team-issued suspension at the beginning of this coming season for drug related issues.

Speaking of riots and brawls on campus...
here's one that has gotten very little press...........but of course we're onto it...
One Indiana State team member and one recruit (the brother of another of the team members) were injured, both seriously in a fist fight.
Felony charges filed against the thugs who are responsible.

but I cannot find any other independent info on this, and I find it pretty hard to believe, that USC would come all the way to Michigan to land a pretty obscure, 5-7, (Rivals has ZERO stars but scout.com has 3-stars)a kid whose only other interest is coming from Central Michiganand a few other mid-majors.

Well, I won't bother to give it, since this is a basketball blog, but I will say that I have an opinion when it comes to Bradley basketball.
I favor the "SINGLE PAYER OPTION". That's defined as the single source for all the best information on what's important in college basketball, and specifically Bradley basketball.
And NONE of it will cost you ONE RED CENT!
You can follow Bradley and general college basketball issues on this blog, on BradleyFans.com, and some topics are posted on twitter..PM me if you need help getting there.. ;)

Go BU! Good things are happening and the season starts soon!

Since the chat Wednesday we've gotten several words of appreciation, a couple calls and even a thank you note ......showing gratitude for the enthusiasm of the fans and the fact that dozens of fans have this kind of fervent interest this early in the season. They really didn't have a sense of how many BU fans do follow the Braves EVERY DAY...and they were duly surprised....so be proud because they are grateful for you guys!!
Along the same vein...a couple events coming up prompt a little alert....
The Itoo Spaghetti Supper and the Soccer Tailgate are both events where the fans can intermingle with the players.
http://bradleyfans.com/vb/showthread.php?t=13047

BUT-- one note of caution is issued...people who are seen as boosters of the university must avoid talking with kids who are seen as prospective recruits.

NOTE--- you can definittely interact with the current players all you want!!So just make the distinction...current players - OK...
any prospective student athletes - careful...

In case you haven't seen, we've had an influx on BradleyFans of posters who are signing up just to bash and lob attacks....it happens all the time, and the fact that the BradleyFans moderators police it pretty vigorously even makes those same few even more obsessed.
Sorry, NOT allowed, and those guys have been banned by the mods....BradleyFans, I think, allows as much or MORE dissent and opposing views as long as they are polite and stay on the topic and don't attack the other posters.
The fact that we do keep that crap off the boards is the SINGLE reason that the people at Bradley have decided to pursue chats with BradleyFans and it's members!
They see a closer relationship (like the chats) as nothing but a HUGE plus to get the word out and in the end it all becomes the equivalent of advertising, promotion, and a boost for Bradley - something they want but WE want as well!
Virtually ALL college programs distance themselves from the message boards, blogs, and fan sites, because they have no control over content and the negative aspect...
ps- the fact that "some" of the other media and fan "outlets" are so constantly negative sure didn't hurt ....
to see more about how I feel about the flamers, go to the next blog entry just below this one........

BradleyFans is a private site (privately developed, owned, and operated)..and there is no guarantee of "freedom of speech", which is the oft used rant of the common message board flamer!

...when one of their players beat another kid into a coma then fled the country and went back to Serbia to play profession basketball and escape charges in the US.
As noted...this makes a whole bunch of Division I players suddenly free on the open market...and even though ISU's Tim Jankovich doesn't have any open scholarships... Jank was reported to have stayed up late last night making numerous phone calls.... ;)

A thought on BradleyFans.com

As I had hinted, in a couple different get-togethers (the chat and the BSS event over the weekend), we had the chance to hear opinions from numerous people affiliated with BU and the team, and unanimously there was high and repeated praise for the message board and the direction it has taken. Specifically, the editing and even banning of the hostile and negative element. Every other message board I have seen that allows the flaming and attacks, especially the personal antagonism and attacks, and attacks against the team and personnel, dies an ugly death.
You don't have to look very far to find a couple boards that used to be busy (PJ, VT, etc..) but are DOA and essentially uninhabited....or inhabited only by the vilest of self-righteous haters. Sorry, that's the way it is...but BradleyFans will never become like that. So we'll continue to keep it positive, because the only people we feel obligated to are the people at BU who want it that way and like it (an understatement) that way. THEY are the ones we seek to please...not the uninvited negative element.
Since I know some of the haters and negative element read this blog, now we know they have learned why they've been booted from BradleyFans...but it still irks them. Maybe some day someone will tell me why some people are such bitter misanthropes that they enjoy being negative 100% of the time, and even lust to go where people are positive and attack them to try to spoil their day as well.
BTW-- ask yourself why the chat went so well when the negative nellies are absent? There was tremendous involvement by dozens of enthusiastic fans...so it'll surely happen again!
Misery loves company, I guess......take 'em down into the pits so you won't be alone, huh??
So - be forewarned, the board works way better without you, so it is an easy decision to boot the element that turns every discussion negative.

The BradleyFans Chat with Coach Jim Les

The chat session last evening with Bradley head coach Jim Les went extremely well....
there were 46 people who signed up and joined the chat room, and most discussed and asked questions.

I had been told there were people posting on other message boards that they were going to try to sneak in and disrupt things, and we had our "security" in place, but it didn't happen. Those who just like to take swipes and attack Bradley and its fan base over on the rapidly failing "so-called Valley" board (I won't even give you the name of the board because it is dying so fast that any extra traffic they might get from a link here would probably double it's activity)...are pretty funny. But they are all pitiful little talkers only, and just jealous of the success of the Bradley fan base.

Again, thanks to all the great fans of Bradley for their active involvement. We are told that the folks at BU, including their fine coaching staff and athletic department also greatly enjoyed the opportunity to do the chat. They realize that a LARGE number of the most enthusiastic and informed Bradley fans hang around on BradleyFans.com all the time. they even vocalize their appreciation and credit BradleyFans for some of the rapidly growing aspects of the fan base. they are clearly thankful the Braves have such an informative and supportive fan site. Very few teams do and most schools will distance themselves MILES from their message boards because of the hostile stuuf emanating from them and the inability ot control or predict the nture of the posts and responses from the fans. But Bradley's fans are some of the most civil, courteous, and unwaveringly supportive that you'll ever find.

I am proud to be a fan of such a great school and coaching staff!

here's a great note, tweeted by the head coach of the AAU Illinois Wolves.......gotta like it!!
http://twitter.com/wolves10/status/4342817106

Jacob Williams is a 6'5" wing guard from St. Patrick's high school (Sam Maniscalco's HS) that Bradley has been following for a long time.
He is just a junior (class of 2011).
Here is the BradleyFans discussion on Williams...

Kourtney Darby is a St. Pat's teammate (2011).

So How Tall Are They Really?

So if Chris Roberts is really 6-3, then how tall is Osiris Eldridge, really?
Eldridge is billed as 6-3, but we all know that the heights are often significantly exaggerated. We just saw where good evidence proves that Ryan Hare, who is billed as 6-4, may be a couple inches or more less than that.
-
-
-
Then we have seen from the NBA predraft measurements, that a lot of players are routinely measured at up to 2 or more inches less than they've been billed at.
Kevin Love was billed at 6-10 but was actually measured at 6-7 3/4.
Michael Beasley was listed as 6-10 at Kansas State but was actually measured at 6-8 1/4 WITH shoes on and 6-7 in bare feet!
Joey Dorsey was billed at 6-9 and was only a little over 6-6.
Reynaldo Balkman was and still is billed at 6-8 but was measured at only 6-5 1/4.
-
-
-
But oddly, some players stand out as quite honest...
Patrick O'Bryant was billed as 7-0 and WAS a 7-footer!
Kevin Durant was listed in college at 6-9 and WAS measured precisely at 6-9 in the NBA predraft camp.
Danny Granger was 6-8 in college but actually was 6-9 when measured.
-
-
So I have two questions....
--Why and how do players get away with such gross inaccuracy and exaggeration?
--and who will be the big "liars" this year at the 2010 NBA predraft camp?
Will Osiris Eldridge really be 6-3? Or will he be closer to 6-1 as I suspect since I have seen him standing right next to our guys who make for a good comparison.
Tim Jankovich is under 6-ft, so, again.....just how tall is OE?

I didn't buy the Blue Ribbon Yearbook this year...first time in a long time....and I probably won't be getting many of the preseason issues.
Seems like more and more they put 98% of their time, effort, and resources on the 20% (or less) of the teams that constitute the BCS boys, and less, and less on anyone else.
Thus the teams in the Valley get ridiculously little coverage, and what we get is so silly and biased..that we might as well let some wild painted-face Creighton fan write the whole Valley segment.
This year's Blue Ribbon guide, like the rest, adds nothing that couldn't have been said about the Valley last April.

Lots of other disturbing news of fights and other incidents in college basketball.
This is starting out to be a potential record breaking year for fighting and arrests...let's hope this does NOT continue.

--One of Kansas' best young stars, Tyshawn Taylor was injured (dislocated thumb) in a campus fight between football and basketball players.
Oddly, if you read all the coverage, there seems to be a strong tendency to downplay this whole thing...and the police appear to not even care!

one newspaper is saying...
"Tyshawn's Facebook says that he hurt his hand "throwing a punch"

And as usual it seems to have all started in a fight over a girlfriend issue...

http://www2.kusports.com/news/2009/sep/23/its-time-call-truce/

This plays right into the comment from yesterday's blog about how the Kansas player who shot people on campus out his dorm window with a pellet gun while he was drinking booze....got off with virtually no penalty at all, while simple underage drinking incidents on some campuses make the headlines for weeks and result in major suspensions.
In less than 8 hours this has generated a 15 page thread on the Kansas message board, but the board is subscription only...
the general consensus is that it'll soon fade to the back pages and nothing will come of the whole issue.
Reminiscent of the fighting and slashing at the Moon Bar...
In fact, with the JR Giddens incident, Sherron Collins legal issues, multiple bar fights and arrestes, and the guys shooting pellet guns out their windows at people, th emultiple times that CJ Giles was let back on the team after slugging his girlfriend......even some of the little reported incidents like Tyrone Appleton and Darnell Jackson...then is Bill Self actually nearing Bob Huggins territory in regards to recruiting and pampering thugs??

Speaking of some pretty soft and irresponsible journalism....this morning's story in Southern Illinois about the Ryan Hare arrest is just downright weird...dishonest really!!
This story strokes SIU and treats them like they're all angels...ignoring the obvious...
http://www.thesouthern.com/sports/article_816a88c4-a7fd-11de-92d6-001cc4c03286.html

note this statement--"SIU--has been relatively clean.Hairston, Tatum, Foster..have had run-ins with the law.NONE has had any subsequent legal issues."
this is simply NOT true...and it's easy to prove...
--Jamaal Tatum's arrest for civil disobedience and disorderly conduct was complicated by kicking out a window at the police office, so he then was also charged with Criminal damage to government property, Willful destruction, and resisting arrest. That was in 2004...
(I have the links to the public database but won't post them here)

BUT-- little known and unreported is the fact that just THREE months earlier...Tatum had been arrested for almost the exact same thing and charged in January 2004 with resisting arrest, while the other charges were dropped.

BUT Tatum has had FIVE MORE run-ins since!! In 2006, he had his DUI plus two other minor offenses...
then in 2008, this crime went virtually unreported...have you ever seen a mention of it??
On 4/28/08 he was arrested for BATTERY!! and resisting an officer
..there were also rumors at that time that he beat up his girlfriend and plead to domestic violence charges..but the point is that he sure didn't stay squeaky clean as this Southern reporter states...

--Hairston, of course, is well known for his arrest in 2004 for criminal trespass, robbery, battery, resisting arrest, etc..but he not only and a couple more arrests on minor things, but he also was later a constant discipline and behavior problem on the team and got himself kicked off at least TWICE!

--then Foster...had his DUI 3/29/05, but he also had further issues and was never quite the same player after the DUI....and exited the team just before his senior season, even tho he still had a year of eligibility remaining.

Then later in the story the writer says "this is Hare's first brush with the law" ---BUT-- of course it is NOT...the writer simply either has NOT done his homework or is lying and pretending the other issues don't exist for the sake of his story and making the point he wishes to make about how good the discipline is down there.......Hare was stopped a year ago...while driving and blew just under what would be a DUI, and so was charged with underage consumption...he literally was in court a couple hours before taking the basketball court and playing a game for SIU...never had a single minute of discipline.

Then the final statement in the article again states unequivocally that the repeat rate of bad behavior in the program "is zero"...-- but of course it is NOT, as the facts prove.
Then I guess the entire tone of this column seems to be just how bad Hare's behavior may have hurt the image of the SIU program...not really a single mention of how Hare's actions have hurt another human or possibly threatened the life or well-being of another person!
Oh well....wish the Braves had such sympathetic and cooperative press..........

This year also has it's first head coach firing...Jim Crews is out at Army...
how he lasted as long as he did is puzzling...his record at Evansville was terrible the final couple years (14-16, 7-21), then he went right to Army where he's never really been even close to a good season, has never had a winning season, and in 7 years is a miserable 59-140.
he's certainly NOT a bad coach, but just how long can "being a Bobby Knight protege" get you...sooner or later the guy has to get something done...

Anyway....I found something funny on the Indiana message board...a comment about Crews..
...here's a guy on the Indiana board discussing Jim Crews getting fired at Army, then he talks about Crews at Evansville and brags on how a couple of Crews' players there were "great players"...he names Anslinger and Holsinger!!!
http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=170&f=2353&t=4811984

Anslinger was there from 2003-2007, and of course Holzinger just graduated. Crews hasn't been at Evansville since 2001-2002. Nice memory, Hoosier fans, both those guys were Merfeld recruits!

Look for this to be the year BU gets mentioned more in Chicago and the Chicago area in regards to recruits!
I think it took a while but the cred is improved and our staff is making inroads...

Here's a report of a high school kid caught shooting other kids with a BB gun.
This kid is barred from sports this year and 5 years of probation issued by the judge!!!
But wasn't one of the Kansas freshmen last year caught shooting people with a pellet rifle - shooting out of his dorm room window while drinking booze!! And...despite that it is basically the exact same offense and possibly worse, the kid got absolutely NOTHING in regards to punishment!
Just a TOTAL of 20 hours of community service...then off the hook.....what a joke...
I guess that just one more of the perks you get when you're a Bill Self recuit!

http://ballhype.com/article/kansas_f_morris_gets_community_service_ap/

In more of the same...Oklahoma State gets off pretty easy on this one...had this been a mid-major, no telling how hard the NCAA would have hammered them.
Remember, they are saying this kid should get NO penalty since it was an INADVERTENT $5000 gift...yet didn't Patrick O'Bryant have to serve the maximum the NCAA could dole out for the same thing, inadvertent benefits, but only a 1/4 of that amount??
POB's inadvertent benefits weren't anywhere close to the $5000 worth this kid got.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=4485332&campaign=rss&source=NCAAHeadlines

And as also as noted elsewhere, Maryland's head coach Gary Williams got a raise and extension to 2012 even though Maryland's had nothing but 7-9 and 8-8 finishes lately, and none of Williams' players ever graduate!
Their board even mentions the academic end and appears to ignore the Maryland basketball program's ZERO percent graduation rate this entire decade!!
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/09/21/AR2009092103246.html

Another blow or two for Indiana...
the rumor is that IU's recruitment of 5-Star Kyrie Irving fell apart during the in-home visit Irving received from Coach Crean. Reportedly an argument broke out about the lack of any talent getting recruited to "surround" Irving at IU, and within minutes, KI tweeted that he had dropped IU.

Also, one of the top targets IU stll had high hopes on was Winston Morgam, whose dad played at IU under Bob Knight...surely Morgan would be loyal and choose IU, right??
Nope...he verballed to "lowly" DePaul this morning!
So -- thus far, only a couple 3-Star recruits for Crean...

One of BU's top recruiting targets, Jershon Cobb of Georgia, committed to Northwestern...but Cobb listed his final five schools before he made the choice...

he listed...Northwestern, Boston College, Bradley, Cincinnati, and Auburn. Nice to see BU hang in there on top recruits, battling it out with the big boys, but sooner or later, we've gotta won one of those battles!

BU wanted Kyle Kelm at one point, but a serious foot injury to Kelm caused almost all the recruiting interest to drop off.
This story says...
"Kelm, who took an official visit to Saint Louis last weekend, selected the Panthers over the Billikens, Northern Iowa, North Dakota State, Wisconsin-Green Bay and others.
(all the rest of the offers dried up)

"His recruitment has changed because of his foot, and Milwaukee never waivered in its desire for Kyle"
UW-M may have gotten a steal is Kelm can fully recover.

On the topic of Bobby Knight....
After the death of Myles Brand, it was curious to see all the venom and hate spewed. And not just from the ignoramuses who do so anonymously on message boards.
The man is dead, so what more do these true idiots want? Here are some comments from the Indiana message board, although many of the worst and most vile were removed:
"he killed the basketball program for 10 years. My memories of him - though mixed - will not be pleasant... I will never forgive him, not for firing Bob Knight; but for hiring Mike Davis"
"Boy did I hate this guy. Destroyed basketball at IU for what looks to be at least 15 years and counting"

...but I guess the responses that troubled me most were the ones the press got from Bob Knight and his son Pat...
Bob Knight didn't give a response....he ducked, dodged, and stayed in hiding and gave no response at all, when a simple word of sympathy would have done a lot to show some class.
Then the Evansville Courier Press reached Bobby's son, Texas Tech coach Pat Knight.
Pat's words were so far in the opposite direction that they really amount to an arrogant, classless slam on a man who just died.
Instead of responding to the interviewer with a simply word of sympathy or a sign of remorse on Brand's passing...
Pat Knight strangely took the opportunity to turn Brand's said death from a horrible disease (pancreatic cancer) as a platform to bash Brand and Indiana University.
Sorry..but any way you look at it, these comments are totally inexcusable. Some who still worship at the Bobby Knight altar have remained silent for fear of angering the zombies in Hoosierland who still worship him, but I will not refrain from calling classless - classless.

Pat Knight's response ...(from the Evansville Courier)
"...it was nice to see IU officials pay tribute to Brand..(Bob) Knight has remained silent, supposedly because he’s been busy traveling. But his son Pat did respond with a statement ...“It’s not like we had a relationship,” said Pat Knight, who was an IU assistant when his dad was fired. “Once someone fires you that’s pretty much it. I still think it was unfair the way he treated my dad..."
...Maybe it’s a good thing Bobby Knight has been unavailable."

--btw, Pat Knight was NOT fired by IU, he quit on his own.

Here's an article giving some followup on Jamar Smith, now in his final year at University of Southern Indiana, which has had quite a bit of controversy with their long time, successful head coach getting canned for numerous rules violations.

This column reveals some never-before revealed details of the infamous night when Jamar slammed the tree...and opens back up some facts that appear to make some people quite uncomfortable and that they hoped would just go away.
http://www.illinihq.com/news/mens_basketball/2009/09/20/jamar_smith_hes_changed_his_life_hes_become_a_man/

Unfortunately, the writer misses again the opportunity to clear up a couple questions that linger....like who actually obtained the booze how a bunch of underage people got so much liquor, who is legally responsible for delivering it to them or selling it to them, and how was it that so many underage people were drinking on a weeknight and obviously the coaching staff had to know and did nothing whatsoever about it (including numerous other underage basketball players) and in the end... nothing was ever said, nobody else ever got any discipline, and the press looked the other way while Jamar took all the heat.
The article confirms that assistant coach McClain was called shortly after 11PM when Jamar returned to the Savoy, yet the police report says nobody could locate Jamar until nearly 1AM.
All this time everyone was pampering Jamar, recall...there was a nearly dead 18 year old lying in the car in the parking lot....
Sorry - but I still think the coaching staff knows a bunch they have never revealed about who was drinking, how they got the booze, and what was done to protect Jamar while Carlwell lay dying.

remember this comment from the news reports...
"Meanwhile, the university is probing whether any other basketball players or other students knew Smith's teammate, Brian Carlwell, was hurt and failed to act, according to WBBM-Ch. 2 and Champaign TV station WCIA-Ch. 3. Dean of students William Riley told WCIA, "some of the things that have been alleged is that whoever knew about his condition or should have known about it, there's code violation for disregard or extreme disregard for students' safety."The school also will look into reports of underage drinking, or if someone provided alcohol to those underage--which are both are against school code, Riley told the station."

and from the district attorney...
--"A number of other team members were gathered at the apartment, (Champaign County State's Attorney) Julia Rietz said. "

Then from Jamar's lawyer..
"Smith plans to plead not guilty to the charges and will request a jury trial."
Jamar Smith's blood alcohol level was 0.17 (more than double the legal limit, and Jamar was underage), and yet Jamar hid out and didn't go to the hospital until several hours after the accident, so his alcohol leval was likely twice that.

so in the end...why the coverup and the rest of the facts hushed and swept under the carpet...
All the other players were there and were drinking too (on a Tuesday nite after a practice) but got total free passes on this.
The team and the coaches never properly disciplined anyone, and even Jamar was given 2nd, 3rd, and 4th chances and blew them all.

One of the nation's top high school senior just hurt his recruiting prowess BIG TIME.

The #2 ranked point guard in the nation in the Class of 2011, Tony Wroten...a 5-STAR 6-4 PG out of Seattle, was playing for his high school football team and tore his ACL.
He is projected to miss the entire basketball season.

Jim Les, Paris Gulley, Josh Tabb, Diamond Taylor

Jim Les make a Top 5 list!!
5th best "Comeback" in Sacramento Kings history!!
impressive!!!

"5. Jim Les, 1990-1994
If anybody could teach Tyreke Evans how to be a prolific shooter, it’s Jim Les. Despite career numbers that are actually not very good, he led the league in three-point shooting in 1991 and was fifth two seasons later. He would have to give up a nice college coaching career to make one last run with the Kings at the age of 46 but I’m sure that Bradley would hold his spot as he breaks out the short shorts, feathery Blagojevich-like hair, and the long range jumper for the Arco faithful one more time.

Maybe he can even bring back his basketball camp for all of the little Kings fans out there."

News on AJ Guyton

Daniel Ruffin's older brother AJ Guyton of Peoria Central was unexpectedly cut from his team in Argentina. AJ had played in Europe the past several years but this season had signed with Lanus (Buenos Aires), a team in the top pro division in Argentina.

http://www.latinbasket.com/team.asp?Cntry=Argentina&Team=2422&Page=1

The Lanus club made a very nice offer and in July, lured Guyton to South America and planned to use him as their full time starting point guard.

http://granabasquet.wordpress.com/2009/08/27/guyton-piso-el-rotili/

...Now they have cut him loose. Here is a blurb from Argentina...

"Lanus cut A.J. Guyton

Lanus decided to cut A.J. Guyton from the squad. The team was not satisfied with the physical conditions of the player and they parted ways. A.J. Guyton started the previous season in Greece playing for Larissa. He later moved to Sweden to take up the invitation from the Sundsvall Dragons. The 31-year-old guard averaged 14.6 points, 2.0 boards and 1.3 assists per game in the Basketligan."

Tough break for AJ...hopefully he'll catch on with another team in time to start the season.

A notice from peoriairishhoops.com (the web site for Peoria Irish Hoops) has stated that Manual's Paris Gulley is committed to "Southeastern Community College"

But I cannot find anything to support he is either at or has signed a LOI to Iowa's Southeastern CC or to Southeastern Illinois College.
I guess time will tell.

Creighton's Chad Millard, one of their very slim frontcourt, has come down with an unusual illness.
http://www.omaha.com/article/20090917/SPORTS02/709179721

Another article out of Omaha, talks a little about the visit to Creighton by Doug McDermott, son of Iowa State's coach Greg McDermott.
He says he's still interested in Creighton even though he will have to walk on and pay his own way the first year as Creighton doesn't want to use one of their final two scholarships for 2010 on him.
Then he'd be eligible for a scholarship after that, but seriously what guarantee would he have?

Note also in the article, Creighton seems to have lost out to Utah on recruit JJ O'Brien because
"the O'Brien family did not like Omaha for personal reasons."
......(ouch!!)

Here's the link to the Wisconsin recruiting site that says Evansville and Illinois State are both after Diamond Taylor who has left Wisconsin after his arrest on theft charges.
http://twitter.com/WisBBYearbook/status/4087671054

ISU does NOT have any scholarships, and already has at least four players walking on ahead of Taylor (Mishler, Blue, Lewis, Coates)...so would Taylor really consider going there?
Maybe Jank really does want to make ISU the one and only TRANSFER U.....even to the extent that he goes after every disgruntled and troubled transfer!

Do a search on the BradleyFans board for some of the other old Josh Tabb threads and the other times he's been in trouble.

The kid has had trouble since getting to Tennessee and has never really played that much, always playing the role of a backup and sub.

More laughable discipline from West Virginia's Bob Huggins...

The Tip of the Iceberg?

More NCAA violations at UK under John Calipari?

Seriously, is there anyone actually reporting the whole story? I suspect not, but here's what is being said.

--John Calipari has coached two teams to the Final Four that were later hit with major penalties for using ineligible players, causing both schools to have to vacate their wins and their Final Four appearance.

--Now Coach Cal is at Kentucky, and already news of more violations there are slowly leaking out.

Even Coach Cal's Athletic Director at Kentucky is trying to justify the rule breaking by not calling it violations, but just calling it "a gray area".

Here's what AD C. M. Newton says...

"Newton noted recently that the new UK basketball coach — like most of his colleagues — can drift into a "gray area" where compliance is open to interpretation."

.......oh really...so even the guy vouching for Calipari admits that Coach Cal drifts into gray areas where he thinks he can get around the precise letter of the rule and get away with cheating?

--Even the University of Kentucky President "recoiled" from those comments and said...

"We don't want gray areas".

Then the President made an amazing statement...that Calipari's past record of cheating and vacated win & Final FGours will actually be a BLESSING TO UK!!

"Todd suggested that Calipari's past — which includes two vacated Final Four appearances — will help block any impulse to cheat."

.........so since when does having a track record of cheating give a guy an advantage in NOT cheating?

--One of Calipari's assistant coaches that he had brought with him to Kentucky from Memphis was Bilal Batley. Batley just "left his position" but some say he was sent packing as a scapegoat to blame for the recent NCAA violaitons that are being uncovered.

Interestingly, before coming to Kentucky and getting fired for committing NCAA violations, Batley has been an assistant at Memphis, Indiana (under Kelvin Sampson) and Oklahoma (under Sampson).

So not only has Batley learned whatever he knows about NCAA compliance and cheating from one of the most prolific cheaters of all time, he also was at THREE consecutive assistant coaching spots at three different schools that ALL share the same fate....that they were ultimately nailed by the NCAA for hundreds of illegal phone calls, fraud with phony ACT tests and players taking the tests for other players, and numerous other violations.

"Earlier in his basketball career, Batley worked for three programs found guilty of major violations of NCAA rules ..

The three were Oklahoma as a student manager, Indiana and Memphis. Improper phone calls to prospects by Kelvin Sampson's staff brought punishments at Oklahoma and Indiana. Batley worked at Memphis in 2008-09, the season after Rose played while a cloud hovered over his SAT score."

--Batley is now cited as having broken more NCAA rules, and one news outlet obtained records via the "the open-records request" showing that another Kentucky assistant also has been violating rules.

Tracy Webster (ex-Illinois assistant) also has committed more than one NCAA violation....

"..Webster...violated a rule by engaging in a conversation with a prospect before April 22, which was prior to the permissible contact date. He received a letter of admonishment.
Another violation occurred on May 26 when a current player — who UK officials acknowledged in June was Darius Miller — had his name used in an advertisement for The Reggie Warford Basketball Camp in Muhlenberg County. The player was unaware of the advertisement, the UK letter said."

....as many will remember, Tracy Webster was actually lured away from Illinois and hired at Kentucky, exclusively so they could lure Darius Miller there, as Miller was close to Webster and was leaning to committing to Illinois. Once Webster was corralled by UK, then Darius Miller followed...and obviously so did a few enticements.......

http://www.kentucky.com/818/story/937012.html

Tracy Webster was dumped when Calipari came in and now Webster is hired as an assistant at DePaul. It's interesting that this whole cheating mess at UK involves Tracy Webster, yet there isn't even one mention of it at all on the DePaul message board, even though they have a thread going on the Kentucky NCAA violations.

http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=430&f=2585

UK basketball will certainly be interesting....interesting to see if a team full of mostly just talented freshmen who plan to be gone and in the NBA in a year can mesh together. Or will there simply NOT be enough basketballs and on-court minutes to go around for those guys who want to showcase their skills and move as high in the lottery section of the next NBA draft?

The Braves Examiner even has soccer coverage!

http://www.examiner.com/x-7020-Bradley-Braves-Examiner

Bradley and the Valley are fortunate to have people like Joe writing about Valley topics....

too bad the fans on the message boards at one team's site are so jealous that they cry like babies when topics like what's written in the Braves Examiner come up there.

--by the way....the Examiner web site used to also include an ISU Redbirds Examiner...

his columns can still be found in the archives, but he is no longer listed anywhere in the index on any of the Examiner sites.

I am curious to know what happened...as just about the only way to get kicked off the index is if you've violated rules. He disappeared suddenly just as football and basketball season are getting underway.

--lastly....we had a laugh once on BradleyFans when Illini assistant Wayne McClain bragged about how Illinois would never stoop to dirty tricks that other schools do, like hiring a kid's dad or his high school coach just to land the recruit.

Crazy thing is that McClain himself basically GOT THE JOB HE HAS because he was the dad and/or high school coach of at least THREE talented recruits who ended up landing at Illinois!

What hypocrisy!

Here's the McClain link, but now we have even a better one!!

"Some colleges take short cuts in their recruiting, hiring a high school or AAU coach or a dad to sign a great young player. ...

Cheating is always a possibility in major college basketball recruiting. Some players have their hands out, some high school and AAU coaches are looking to profit from their players, shoe and other apparel companies have a financial stake in results, and some schools take short cuts to produce a winner.
Some schools hire high school and AAU coaches to gain access to their players. And some provide jobs and other opportunities for parents of players so they can remain close to their offspring. Illinois is not one of those schools, and McClain is proud of that fact.
...Some people are in the market for that (extra inducements), there's no doubt about that.
"That to me is the most important part. We can sleep at night. We know the kids we get have done it the right way."

http://illinois.scout.com/2/879040.html

But now listen to what the fans at Indiana are saying about their squeaky clean program that just got caught with major NCAA violations....

"..there's no question that CTC (Coach Tom Crean) has gone about recruiting him (and others) the right way. If sleazier ways of getting recruits would have worked better (cf. Calipari and World Wide Wes and getting Weems as grad assistant, Pitino hiring the Pike Assistant Coach to improve his leverage with Marquis Teague), so be it. I'm glad that CTC isn't willing to be "successful" in that way."

http://indiana.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=731&tid=132190000&mid=132190000&sid=942&style=2

Hmmm..really??? So Coach Crean never hires some kid's AAU coach in order to land him???

Funny how the fans there don't even know who their players and coaches are.

Tom Crean has indeed hired as one of his top assistants and recruiters, Roshown McLeod.

http://iuhoosiers.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/mcleod_roshown00.html

...who just happens to be an ex-AAU coach with lots and lots of connections....and one of his AAU players just happens to be...

David Williams........the kid who played on McLeod's AAU team that JUST committed to...

Indiana!!!

...so indeed, Tom Crean has done precisely and exactly what was said he'd never do!

He hired the AAU coach of a kid that he was recruiting, then the kid commits to Indiana!

http://iuhoops.blogspot.com/2009/04/out-goes-nick-williams-in-comes-david.html

This package deal technique is used widely by the big boys.....and the really wealthy programs like Rick Pitino's can afford to hire lots of recruits' dads and coaches as his personal assistants!

Just what are personal assistants?? Remember what Rick Pitino did for one of his prior personal assistants....he hooked Tim Sypher up with the blonde woman from the restaurant and she became his wife!!

One little recruiting note...

ISU is going head to head against Cal State-Northridge, battling for the services of junior college recruit Carlton Guyton, a 6-3 SG at Mineral Area juco.

http://www.chicagohoops.com/articles1/cguyton2.html

ISU, who have graduated seven jucos and transfers in the past 15 months, now have replaced them with numerous other juco transfers and other DI transfers. The Current ISU roster has eight jucos and transfers...many of whom are even lured to be walk ons. How many walk ons are they going to play, as the CHN blurb about ISU even suggested some of their walk ons will be impact players for them!
