Some news on Andrew Warren, Sammy Maniscalco, then Bruce Pearl, Britney Spears, Coach Ford, NO Banquet this year?? .. and some other odd topics...

Did you know one of Andrew Warren's friends and schoolmates was drafted yesterday in the WNBA Draft??
Yup -- #8 overall Ta'Shia Phillips is a 6-6 senior at Xavier University and a 2007 graduate of Brebeuf Jesuit Academy in Indianapolis -- where Andrew Warren was a 2006 grad.
Congrats to Ta'Shia and to Brebeuf!

Here's an interesting story of "So many unanswered questions" and Illinois -- kind of an uncertain environment Sammy Maniscalco is stepping into. But I am confident Sammy can turn that program around and make it a winner -- ;)

BTW -- Champaign writer Paul Klee thinks Sammy will be the natural team leader!!
LINK

Klee also thinks Stan Simpson -- who just verballed to Memphis -- simply does not look like a player who will ever be effective at D-I -- and I kinda agree.

Recognize any of these guys?? The Illinois Wolves -- off to a great AAU start -- a couple have been Bradley recruits before the coaching change -- but now we'll have to wait & see...

Speaking of Wolves -- it is reported that at the Illinois post-season banquet tonight, that Demetri McCamey and Mike Davis (and possibly also Mike Tisdale) will be named Co-MVP's for this year's team....Congrats Meech & Mike (& maybe Tizzy)!

Not sure if I like the headband but this YouTube video is a great highlight reel of Chris Roberts dunks for his NBDL team...

Anyone else notice we're not having a Bradley basketball post-season banquet this year?? So whose idea is this -- the fans want to celebrate their heroes and cheer our favorite players and see who gets the team awards. Too bad someone has axed the idea...anyone know whazzup?? ;)

Here's a real laugh --- Tennessee commits yet another impermissible benefits and recruiting violation...this time, while definitely connected to Bruce Pearl -- it's actually ironic since it's more freebies Tennessee gets caught giving to recruits who were involved in the scandal that got Pearl fired anyway.....
In the end it proves to me that they just have no conscience about following rules and find that rules are merely hindrances to recruiting and thus they have to find a way around the rules!

Purdue fans hate their newly designed mascot.....do these people who design new mascots ever think about what they're doing before doing it?? This could have easily been predicted.....poor thinking and planning...

There hasn't been an illegal point shaving scandal in college basketball for a few years -- but here's the latest, involving University of San Diego where ex-BU Brave Darian Norris plays.....none of the current players in implicated...

Harvard's Tommy Amaker is talking with Miami (FL) about their head coaching spot.

Butler's Shelvin Mack is declaring for the draft -- not hiring an agent.

Two Florida players get arrested for felony burglary charges - one was previously an Iowa recruit......LINK

Cody Larson also had some serious legal issues while in high school with peddling drugs...so why are top schools like Florida still wanting this guy? -- LINK

Speaking of Florida...
Fired Arkansas head coach John Pelphrey is going to Florida to be an assistant under Billy Donovan -- LINK

Did you know Brittany Spears was drafted yesterday in the WNBA Draft?? Yes....but it is NOT the Britney Spears (slightly different spelling) who is the pop star...although the confusion is causing some issues in Phoenix!!
LINK

Does having a name like this help or hurt recruiting -- especially when going after minorities....?

Speaking of odd names.....One of the top Chinese coaches just got canned for being abusive to players!
Anyway -- who really wants a coach named FAT BIN???

I see that Bradley's new head coach is already getting together a schedule of personal lunches and appointments with some of Bradley's biggest fans and the members of the Braves Scholarship Society. He personally wants to get together and meet the top supporters, and long time donors and fans of Bradley basketball and work hard to impress them and keep them on board. This of course is important since every time there is a coaching change, some fans get disgruntled and may leave -- we certainly saw this when Jim Molinari was fired...and especially again when Jim Les was hired and a whole bunch of the strongest supporters of Wayne McClain were terribly upset and literally threatening a boycott -- saying that they were going to make sure that nobody from "their community" ever came to Bradley games again.

I guess I am not sure how any one person can always speak for "their community" -- since I also live in a community and there's nobody there I'd have speaking for me.
Anyway -- no sooner had Coach Les got up and running, and he landed great local kids such as Marcellus Sommerfield, Daniel Ruffin, Jeremy Crouch, etc...and a whole lot of the very people from our communities did come back to Bradley games, so in the end the WM supporters' threats were pretty empty.
But there were a few who had season tickets and who just abandoned them and never came back.
One -- who was very widely outspoken and who said he was going to give up his board seat, give up his season tickets and never return...actually made a pretty high profile reverse course and did come back...remember this??
Judge Joe B. McDade swore in 2002 he'd never return to campus but became a re-born big time fan just a couple years later when BU made their Sweet Sixteen run.

So Coach Ford wants to get the big donors into the fold and be sure they continue to be suppotive of Bradley.
I read someone on a message board saying that they didn't think Coach Ford would really care what anyone from the BSS thought...how stupid can one fan be?? Of course Coach Ford cares about the boosters who are the best the University has....
the fact that one of his first actions as coach is to call each one and arrange a lunch is proof he wants to keep the status quo and keep the key part of the fan base happy...
and good for him.......there's plenty of reason to go after that group of bigger donors and supprters -- they are the ones who helped build the new facilities -- many have their names on certain components of the facilities!
BTW -- here's a list from a couple of years ago as to who are the biggest and best supporters......make what you want of it. But there's a lot of people who claim to be important Braves fans and "big time fans and supporters" whose names aren't anywhere on this list. Hmmmm -- I find that interesting.....there's an old quote...."where your treasures are, there your heart will be also.."
-- mostly meant to draw a clear distinction between true believers and fake ones...but it is also relevant to draw a clear line of distinction among Bradley supporters...showing that some talk the talk but never put their money where their mouths are...

Did you see this....a study showing that doctors are far more likely to choose the riskier course of treatment for themselves than for their patients. All the articles I found simply describe this as if doctors are simply risk takers and are more likely to do risky things -- as if it's kind of a fun seeking thrill seeking behavior....
BUT -- that's not at all what's going on here and as usual the media compleely misses out on the entire concept in this study!
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iEpJVxETPBG3KpeikzvoZS-_1Wow?docId=32bc11e011ec4668855de792d58ebb98

For those who care -- here's the explanation....
this is NOT to be interpreted as something that doctors do because of themselves...but something doctors do because of ONE SINGLE outside reason..

In each of the cases involved in this study -- the doctors, of course, know that the riskier course of treatment is also the one most likely to result in better, overall long term survival.
So of course they'd choose that for themselves -- they would want the best survival and would be willing to take the minimal risks -- in one case it would be the cancer-free survival without a colostomy bag and the other it would be full prevention from getting the flu.

Wanna know what was the single reason doctors chose the considerably less risky option for patients despite the lower survival and the incrased risk of long term unpleasant effects??

Well -- as usual -- the media totally misses it....but it's because of the liability issues...the lawsuits...
Every single doctor knows that there are lawyers and patients wanting to sue around just about every corner -- and even though the one option might be the best option -- in their minds the doctors know if it is the riskier option then sooner or later one of the patients is going to be unhappy with the outcome, they're going to get a lawyer, and they're going to sue and claim they shouldn't have been given the riskier option. It is inevitable in today's lawsuit-crazy society...
If you think otherwise, that this suit-crazy society is NOT the main reason for the results seen in this study then you are either naive or intentionally deceiving yourself...because almost every medical decision made nowadays has this one thought in mind...how can the precriber best shield himself or protect himself from the inevitable risks or bad result somewhere down the road that will result in having to fight a lawsuit.

Even if something bad happens only once in 10,000 occurrences, then realize every doctor in practice will eventually see 10,000 patients and thus almost guarantee the outcome he'd like to avoid. And, of course, lawyers all know this...they plan on it and even run ads on TV trying to shake prospective patients out of the woodwork so they can bolster their lawsuits and win big money settlements against medical personnel who are simply trying to give the best recommendations they can.

So you can see it is a darned if you do-darned if you don't atmosphere -- if you don't treat, the patient may get a bad result and of course if you do treat they may also get a bad result...but if they get the bad result in the 2nd situation, then they will look at your treatment as the cause and are more likely to sue.....if they get ill only from the illness, then it's not as likely they will sue the doctor who chose the conservative form of treatment. So in the end the patients and lawyers have definitely created the atmosphere where they are NOT geting the best recommendations -- but instead getting perhaps a blend of the best tempered with the safest choice. This is what they have asked for with their lawsuits.
