Some Oddball Stories & other Valley News

Here's a real unusual story of how the USC basketball team manager blurted out something from the bench in this weekend's game, he was heard by the ref, and the team was subsequently called for a technical foul that cost them the game!!

The team manager was really in deep doo-doo, and has since been sent packing!!

Speaking of the Pac-10, who wants to win the conference?? Looks right now like nobody wants to....
In 27 of the past 32 Pac-10 races, the conference champion had 3 or less conference losses....but already, only half way through the conference schedule, there are only two teams with 3 losses, and everyone else has MORE!
In fact, LAST PLACE in the Pac-10 right now is only 3 games out of first place!!
Two teams are 6-3, two are 5-4, five teams are 4-5, and one is 3-6!
Only four of the Pac-10 teams have overall records better than .500.

Here's another controversy topic...this one involving the Missouri Valley.
Seems the Drake PA announcer has come under some serious fire for making multiple LOUD announcements that continue on for up to 20 seconds into the opponents' possessions, and the Creighton fans are pretty ticked and have called the guy out.

Here is the story...........

Here are a few quotes from the story...
"...something happened during the Jays game at Drake that needs to be addressed. Some might call it sour grapes for bringing up something as nominal as the PA voice after a loss, but...
Bob Quinn is the voice of the Drake Bulldogs inside the Knapp Center for basketball games ..
I have been to college basketball games all around the country, but Saturday night was very unique. I witnessed a PA announcer being allowed to behave like he was calling an And 1 Mix Tape Tour stop.
It is impossible to say what impact the PA announcer had on the game except that it was a major distraction..
During important moments, his voice boomed for several seconds after Drake no longer had possession of the ball. Numerous times, after Creighton crossed midcourt with the ball, Quinn was still on the loud speaker speaking to the Bulldog fans.
It was an inappropriate use of the mic and while Creighton's team would never admit it, it was distracting.
In fact, it is believed that this is the second time in as many home games his behavior on the mic has been brought into question. It is rumored that Wichita State officials also contacted the Missouri Valley Conference office to complain about the overzealous nature of Drake's PA announcer.
Quinn was heard several times saying, "Get on your feet, and let's play some defense!" while the Jays were trying to execute their offense.
Listening to Quinn yell and hold "Josh Young" after a made basket for well over 15 seconds made me feel like I was at a Cleveland Cavalier home game .."

Makes you kinda glad we have Paul Herzog -- who always does a fine job........

Here are a few interesting threads from other message boards--

--Creighton fans blaming their new message board for their team's poor performance...
the original posts were deleted, but here they are reproduced on another board...

--SIU fans, not used to losing, are bailing like crazy with their team in 9th place...
reportedly the actual attendance at the Wichita State game was well under 4,000, despite the announced attendance of 4,700.

--couple stories on Osiris Eldridge, but in this first link, King "O" seems to be conceding he is NOT going to get drafted or play in the NBA...
"I don't think I'm one of those players that can know I'm going to get drafted......I might be working at Jewel."

Another discussion on one of the IU boards is about how a really odd chant was being repeated again and again at the Purdue-Penn State game...
while the Purdue game was going on right in front of them, the Boilermaker fans responded to the announcement of the Indiana-Illinois game score with chants of
"IU Sucks, IU Sucks..."
It really has to be a pretty rare occurrence when a team chants against another team that isn't even in the building!!
But I guess such is the rivalry between the Boilers and the Hoosiers!!

A lot of buzz about a rumored story of the decision being made that Pitt will leave the Big East and join the Big Ten...

Anyone think some team ought to recruit this guy? (NO, not the one on the left!!!)
I wonder if he can dunk?

Some of you might remember a very well known and even world reknowned Bradley teacher/professor named Ernst Ising in the physics department.
Well, Dr. Ising died in 1997 at over 98 years of age, but his wife is still alive at 108!
Here is a story on her and a couple links to remind you of Dr. Ising...
