Toledo freshman Jake Barnett has transferred to Saint Louis to play for Rick Majerus. He reportedly checked out Bradley and visited in Peoria before choosing SLU...so I am sure he has potential to be a good player or BU would have never been looking...
He led Toledo with 12.9 ppg, but let's see how he got those points.......
First he played on one of the very worst teams in all of Division I. Toledo was 4-28 last season against a terrible slate of opponents...not just the weakly MAC opponents, but gobs of their non-conference foes were also among the bottom of the barrel. They even played a regular season game against Rochester College, who isn't either NCAA OR NAIA...they play in a college association (ASCAA) that is so small and obscure that nobody's even heard of them, and nobody is under scholarship.
Toledo's Strength of Scheduling would have ranked them 11th in the Missouri Valley - well worse than every other Valley team, even Illinois State - if you can believe that!!!
So, they kinda gave Jake the free reign to shoot all he wanted to -- so he did!!
He shot 361 times, making 134 (37%). He also launched 192 3-pointers!!
NOBODY on Bradley's entire team in the past few seasons has ever launched that many shots....only Osiris Eldrudge comes close, and even he only launched 253 shots as a freshman!!
I don't think you can compare to Jeremy Crouch, since JC was over 40% from his career from 3-point land and even hit 50% one year!
Also, the season JC averaged about what Jake had last year (13.8 ppg compared to Jake's 12.9), Jeremy shot only 266 FG attempts...almost 100 fewer than Jake to get about the same number of points!!
JC also shot way fewer 3-pt attempts.
So, Jake Barnett might turn out to be a good get for SLU, but SG is where they are already the strongest...unless a few of their players get booted in the wake of this recent rape/assault scandal involving a couple starters.
BTW - Jake's best games at Toledo always came against the worst of their opponents......
When they played UM-Baltimore County, Jake got 26, and against UIC he had 14 but it took him 17 shots...
Against the tougher teams like Michigan State (8 points 13 shots) and Alabama (1-7 on 3-pointers), and Ohio (Jake was only 5-20 and 2-11 from 3-pt)...he always seemed to struggle unless he could get off a couple dozen shots or so...
He obviously had the ball in his hands a ton if he's taking all those shots...so surely if he's covered he'd be giving up the ball and picking up a few assists along the way...right??
Well........nope, considering he's playing almost 35 minutes or more every game, he barely got 1 assist per game!!
And he had 90 turnovers, way more than anyone else on the team and a whopping number of turnovers for a guy who didn't play any point guard!!!
(Assist to Turnover Ratio of 0.5!)
So time will tell....he could be a very good player but considering the fervor that everyone was chasing after every transfer this spring, Jake's name didn't seem to pop up all that often....kinda looks like he was left with very few options so that tells you something.....
........his shooting percentages are average at best...and under-average for a guy who is their go-to scorer....
and his turnover numbers are strikingly high and his paucity of assists speaks for his unwillingness to share the ball.
Remember....Toledo LOST 28 out of 32 games that they played with Jake playing way, way more minutes on the floor than anyone else!!
And the schedule they played overall was way worse than the weak schedule ISU played...so keep that in mind.
As I said elsewhere, I'd be pretty reluctant to make comparisons with Jeremy Crouch at this point......Jeremy's shooting percentages were consistently way higher, and his assists to turnovers were way better!!

Jake has been through comments like yours countless times before and has proven them all wrong. The great thing about Jake is his ability to listen, learn, and apply what his head coach wants of him on the court. Jake will make his teammates better. He always has and always will. Jake's a team player. You never mentioned that he is a 4.0 student and has high moral character. I wouldn't doubt if Jake plays a key role in making SLU a great team in the next few years. Keep tabs on him. I think you'll like what you see.
