MVC is a BIG MAN's League?, Creighton's exhibition game, Coach MO wins, Dayton gets ROBBED!, & lots of other college basketball news..

Here's an article by the SIU beat writer who seems to be saying MVC is a big man's league this year --- I guess time will tell.........
http://thesouthern.com/college/siu/article_284da91e-e7c2-11df-b7d4-001cc4c002e0.html

In the only Valley exhibition last night......
Creighton beat Northern State (D-II) 79-67 game was closer than many would have liked, and Creighton shot bad from outside...
Coach Greg McDermott's son Doug McDermott scored 18 pts, and had 7 rebs.
Kenny Lawson 10 pts, 5 asst.
Antoine Young played 34 minutes, 16 pts, 6 asst.
Many observers saying 6-10 freshman Will Artino -- probably a redshirt candidate!
McDermott is not going to redshirt.
Overall shooting pct. from 3-pt was 25%

Coach Jim Molinari's first exhibition at WIU ended in a nice win..
WIU clobbered Monmouth 89-41..
For the losing Monmouth Scots, Bryce Donaldson (from East Peoria HS) was 1-7 and just 2 pts.

For WIU -- Billy Molinari from Peoria Christian High School had a great game -- playing off the bench for just 20 minutes total, Billy had 10 pts, 3 rebs, 5 assists and ZERO turnovers!
Several other WIU guys including big man David Gebru & Ceola Clark had nice games.

Northwestern beat Robert Morris 91-71 in an exhibition..
NU's Drew Crawford, John Shurna, & Jershon Cobb had good games.
Ex-BU recruit Nick Fruendt barely played...
you have to wonder if he's getting pretty tired of getting blisters on his butt from riding the pines.
Robert Morris has a few familiar names --
--ex-BU recruit from Chicago Diante Watkins started and had 13 pts, but took 20 shots
Darren Tillman was scoreless
Larry Dumas - who bolted from WIU when Molinari came in - had 10pts
Northwestern had trouble putting them away -- the game was still just a 7-point game in the final 13 minutes....

ICC men's basketball needed a last second 3-pointer to beat St. Ambrose's JV...73-72..

Here's some results of other early season games and exhibitions........
Duke beat Cal Poly-Pomona (D-II) 81-60 -- 6 pt game at half and single digits into he 2nd half..
Duke was 2-15 from 3pt range, and Duke's starters all had to play regular season minutes - almost 30 mpg...and Duke won the rebounding edge only 39-37!

UCLA over Westmont 95-59

Pitt over IU-P (Indiana-Pa) 73-56

Butler beats Hanover 80-41

South Carolina beats Kentucky Wesleyan 71-58 ** this game was CLOSE!! South Carolina trailed inside of the final 6 minutes, and inside of the final 3-4 minutes it was a 4-pt game!

Baylor beat Midwestern State 68-59 ** likewise -- this D-II led as late as 8 minutes remaining and the lead for Baylor was 4-5 in the final 1-2 minutes of the game.

Florida Atlantic loses their exhibition 85-81 to Northwood (and NAIA D-II school!)

Marshall beat Concord 112-65

Western Kentucky beats Xavier of La. 84-69

UT-Chatt beats Tenn. Wesleyan 82-52

Austin Peay beats Central Missouri 69-64

Southern Miss over William Carey 87-58

Akron 111 - John Carroll 48

In New Mexico's win over Eastern New Mexico...Steve Alford's Lobos looked bad
This was a 3-pt game inside 10 min

It was bound to happen as Kentucky Coach John Calipari is spoiled after just one season having 5 1st rounder NBA draft picks on his squad..
He still has a load of McD AA's and 5-Star kids but he's already losing it!!
John Calipari criticizes his own players for being soft!!
He very unfavorably compares his team this year to last year...
".. last year..when we were able to practice, I didn’t
have to do what I have to now, which is
manufacture the environment of toughness. We had
it. We just threw the ball up and we beat the crap
out of each other, and we had 15 guys. Here, I’m
going to have to manufacture it a little bit.."

Dayton's men's basketball team was robbed -- literally --
during practice on Tuesday, the lockerroom was ransacked and items valued at up to $2000 were stolen

Here's a really nice blog -- always has good stuff........

This in an interview of Wichita State's Toure Murry...he answers one question about who's the Valley's toughest player..

"Who is the toughest MVC player for you to guard?

A: It was (Illinois State’s) Osiris Eldridge. This year, I would say it’s Andrew Warren (of Bradley). He can make shots."

There's also an interview of Indiana State's Dwayne Lathan...

Here's another nice blog -- covers future BU opponent NIU --

Purdue's Robbie Hummel is definitely taking a different route this time in getting his ruptured ACL repaired..
He is going to a different surgeon than the one who did his first repair..
Re-tears of ACL's when repaired are rare, and Hummel seemed to be back on the court just a little too fast the last time -- getting fully cleared just 6-7 months after the repair!

Ex-Saluki Josh Bone who was booted at SIU and ended up walking on at Tennessee -- and being part of an Elite Eight team last year --
was just returning for his senior season and has now broken a bone in his left wrist, suffered during the exhibition win Wednesday over Brevard.
In that exhibition Bone didn't even enter the game until only 3:44 remaining and Tennessee up 48 points (83-35) -- so I would have to think Bone knows he isn't going to get much playing time even if he's healthy -- so why redshirt!

Only 2 exhibition games into the season and Illini fans are pretty upset -- some are demanding answers.....maybe Bruce Weber's not that far from the hot seat after all!!
