The subject comes up once in a while as to how much officials get paid....and how much the top refs make for the games they work...
As most know, the amounts paid depend on several factors, the main one is the level at which the game is being played...
What I mean is that a 5-6th grade level game generally pays less to officiate than a high school game....etc..
Well I have personally organized and arranged payment for games/refs at the elementary, HS, and junior high level...so I have some knowledge...
BUT over the weekend I ran into a friend who is a pharmaceutical sales rep by day but a very top official in evenings as a 2nd job.
I know some of you would know his name, but I learned a lot about how much refs and umps get paid during our conversation.
This friend only works games that aren't too far outside of Peoria because of family and job, but he did have a good knowledge of the amount the refs get paid at various levels., so I would vouch for this coming from a pretty good and reputable source.
From my own knowledge..
the junior high baseball and basketball umps & refs get around $40-60 per game. Some schools will pay more for the better refs but that's true for all levels, and tourney games pay more...up to even $100.
High school refs for basketball can get $40-60 for summer games, but regular season pretty consistently will pay more, on up to over $100 per game.
This particular friend has actually done college games, so he knew what they pay...
He has done ICC baseball and basketball and the rate is $90 for a single baseball game, and a bit more for basketball...and at least double that for a DH or back to back basketball games like when they do women's games followed by the men's game...but that isn't too often.
Then he said he has done some MVC women's games but never an MVC men's basketball game, although he knows the amounts paid...
He has done some MVC baseball.
All pay will also include (separately) the customary travel reimbursement as well.
for regular MVC baseball games, $150 to $175/gm and you can get $500+ for a 3-game weekend series because the travel is minimized.
For MVC basketball they get way, way more...
$800 to $1200/gm, and even up to $1500 in order to land the top (name) refs for high profile games that include the contenders, or that are on TV.
The Big Ten routinely pays $1500 for a single basketball game, and higher for some....and of course the tournament games always pay better....thus the big games like in the Big Ten, preferentially get the name-refs the ones we see a lot on TV because they are well liked, know the rules, and make good calls.
I know some of our readers and posters have done some reffing, so if anyone has more to add, I would like to know....just PM me on BradleyFans.
