Another Myth Busted - SIU's Gene Teague is NOT the MVC Freshman of the Year, plus lots more on Valley stat leaders, and Go BU Braves Soccer!
OK -- time to bust yet another urban myth -- or, actually since it's coming out of Carbondale, IL -- it really can't be very urban...more like Boondock-Myth...
-- does anyone else recall this...?
The people at SIU continue to propagate a complete falsehood...
I heard it, saw it, read it... again at least three MORE times just yesterday!!
Here's the myth --
that SIU's Gene Teague was last year's Missouri Valley Freshman of the Year!!
Here it is .....directly FROM the offical SIU web site in a letter direct from the AD..
"In men's basketball, Gene Teague earned MVC Freshman of the Year honors"
http://siusalukis.cstv.com/sasf/silu-AD.html
NO HE DIDN'T!!! What alternate universe does this stuff come from??
THRER is NO TRUTH to this at all!!
Plus -- I have seen this elsewhere -- on message boards and even on BradleyFans where people keep spouting this off as if they have been brainwashed and as if it is true!!
I even heard it last night as if the SIU Sports Information office gave the info to the broadcasters!!
Well -- I am here to tell you it is TOTALLY false!!
Gene Teague was on the All Freshman Team but he failed to make even the All-Newcomer Team which Colt Ryan made and ...
Evansville's Colt Ryan was the Freshman of the Year by a landslide!

http://www.mvc-sports.com//pdf8/675791.pdf
And here are two other columns -- one from The Southern Illinoisan, the local Carbondale newspaper...
both saying falsely that Teague was the 2010 Freshman of the Year in the Valley..
so this is obviously something people have apparently tried to drum into an urban legend out of total falsehood!

So --- yet another myth debunked!! But -- it'll live on as long as the SIU people keep lying like this....
Here's proof that we have tried before to put this myth to rest - yet it lives on...
http://bradleyfans.com/vb/showthread.php?p=183912#post183912
And -- it would behoove the entire Missouri Valley if the AD at SIU would stop putting out completely FALSE info that slanders Colt Ryan!
Check Yesterday's blog -- proof that our "big guys" didn't do so bad...and lot of other followups and news.......

In the first weekend of Missouri Valley games, here are the stat leaders........
--a lot of Bradley kids doing well..
and Walt Lemon leads ALL Valley freshmen in THREE different stat categories...scoring, rebounding, steals!

Hey -- did anyone watch the SIU-Illinois game last night??
There's a little discussion on the Bradleyfans board and plenty of discussion on the Saluki and Illini boards....
but two extra thoughts...
--why doesn't SIU ever try to get the ball into the hands of someone who is within 20 feet of the hoop?
I maybe saw only one or two such passes all night...and even when they happened, Gene Teague just cowered and kicked the ball back out.
Come on -- take it to the hoop!
Illinois had 22 assists on 32 FG's, while SIU had just 9 assists (equal to how many Demetri McCamey had all by himself) on 24 baskets (and 64 FG attempts)!
Teague had just 4 FG attempts and just 4 pts -- going to the line just once (2-2 on FT).
--SIU was said to be going to be more defensive and deliberate this season...hmmm...
not only was there little defense, but they launched shots 3-4 seconds into the shot clock over and over...like they were holding hot potatoes!
Sure they hit a few 3-pointers early on, but overall they shot poorly and they are not going to win a lot of games launching gobs of 3-pointers.
I just don't understand that they are playing like a low level D-I -- kinda like an Alcorn State or Towson -- just jacking up shots with no discipline or apparent attempt to run an offense.
How long has Lowery been there?? Do they have an offense to run?
Now for the non-sports part of the blog --
Did you all read this...?
"1 in 10 kids diagnosed with ADHD"
http://www.suntimes.com/lifestyles/health/2886726,CST-NWS-add12.article
http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2010/11/11/131243971/adhd-on-the-rise-1-in-10-kids-now-affected
So -- 1 in every 10 kids in America is diagnosed with ADHD!!
Why is this not bigger news? If 1 in 10 kids even had the flu it would cause the creation of several new government agencies to find a cure...and we'd heard about it endlessly!
Keep in mind, this does NOT count the fairly large number of kids whose moms BELIEVE they have ADHD but who have not taken the child for evaluation or diagnosis, those whose kids definitely do have ADHD but who choose not to ask the medical profession for their help and who choose to manage the condition on their own, and those who think their kids have ADHD regardless of whether the doctors label them as having ADHD.
Thus -- perhaps as many as 20-25% of all kids fit one of those categories!!
So -- where did this come from? No kid in the world had ADHD until a couple decades ago when it became trendy to give that diagnosis. And in many countries throughout the world...there's not a single known case of ADHD -- believe it or not!
So how come nobody's asking the single most obvious question...
where does all this ADHD stuff come from and why is it that seemingly only America has this much of an issue with it??
Well -- there are three simple reasons...but you won't read those reasons in many of these articles, since it is politically unpopular to actually just tell parents why their kids are acting like they do. It's just so much easier to give the kids a diagnosis and say their behavior is not really within their control and it's also not the parents' fault!
That's just the modern medical way of dealing with things -- jusy blame some disease and everyone is happy...parents, doctors, newspaper writers!
We even do it with alcoholism and even certain perversions and criminal issues..
And the meds for ADHD do work somewhat and for a while -- so even the treament of ADHD seems to make a lot of people happy...
but what's really going on here, and why is this condition affecting more than 10% (and I noted maybe as much as 25%) of all American kids (and similar numbers in northern Europe -- but far, far lesser numbers in most other parts of the world.)
Here are three reasons -- but again, you won't find many people willing to discuss these reasons because they sorta indict both the medical profession and the parents.
In fact ...read those links above and they say...
"there is no clear answer"
.. or there are
"NO explanations" or that it's not well understood....!
And many of the "popular" scapegoats that have been blamed in the past -- have been fully ruled out and false, such as lead ingestion & poisoning, food dyes, vaccinations, "secret" hidden chemicals that the government is hiding in foods, and mothers being prescribed and taking certain medicines.
But here's what's really going on.......
1- There's simply no discipline...parents are taught to let the kids exert their own personalities, they are taught it is bad to spank or offer any significant discipline (except "timeouts"), and even in some countries and some states, laws are being passed to step in and prohibit parents from using the discipline they want to use. Schools likewise are severely restricted and have let wild behavior just pass as just part of being "normal"...until the kid is so wild he gets labelled "hyperactive" or ADHD.
"Hyperactive" behavior is even applauded and rewarded by many parents who think it means their kid is more energetic and learning faster and doing better.
So the hyperactivity is literally something parents (knowingly and unknowingly) are breeding into their kids by NOT propely disciplining them. You may argue if you want, but everywhere parental discipline of children is softened, then hyperactivity disorders skyrocket, and in every nation (some of which are considered "backwards" because of their cultural features of discipline) that discipline is more strict and regimented, then ADHD becomes ever more scarce!
2- Fast paced society and stimuli for the children. Have you watched anything on TV, any kids' cartoons, etc?? The scenes move at lightning speed, and no scene is static on the screen for more than a split second. Plus, parents don't have as much interaction any more, and they just let their kids watch more and more TV -- some surveys saying American kids watch 4 to even 6 hours a day!!
Well, if a flashing, fast paced electronic device is literally raising your kid, then you might just have to accept that there are consequences.
This answer is a no-brainer (no pun intended) but people and "experts" who make their livings on TV are not going to tell you this!
They'd love for you and your kids to watch TV 24/7 and love it no matter how bad of an influence it is!
But the sheer number of studies that now prove this TV-ADHD connection are indisputable.
http://www.whitedot.org/issue/iss_story.asp?slug=ADHD%20Toddlers
http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/abstract/113/4/708
3- Overdiagnosis of a fabricated condition...
Let's face it -- everyone and anyone can be hyperactive. And many - if not most - kids who are given this diagnosis are simply variants of NORMAL!!
So where do we draw the line? Both parents and doctors are ever more inclined to just call some kid ADHD for a number of reasons.
It gives the parents some sense that they've finally figured out why their kid isn't as they want, and it keeps a lot of doctors busy treating things that serve the medical profesison quite nicely.
Many studies have cast severe doubt on how many kids really need to be diagnosed with this condition compared to how many actually ARE!
In the last 2 decades, the use of medicines like Ritalin in children has incresed over 700%!!!!
Literally hundreds of studies show that as many as half or more kids diagnosed with ADHD are completely normal or simply conditioned to be active by the behavioral stimuli they receive -- and they don't need medicines.
Lastly -- in many population subgroups within the United States, ADHD is unheard of and virtually non-existent. So how can children in Mormon, Mennonite, Orthodox Jewish, and fundamental Christian groups and cultures have virtually NONE of what much of the rest of the nation has in massive abundance??
Again -- what you are reading in the newspapers on this topic is only a small part of the truth...but the facts are out there.
Speaking of the media...locally has anyone else noticed what I have noticed...
Since the re-tooling of the local Peoria newspaper...not only is it smaller with tinier print..
but there's also obviously some new factor that makes them take way longer to get the issue in print.
This sure isn't going to help them sell more newspapers... I used to get my paper as early as 3AM, then it was 4AM, then 5AM, then 6AM...but since the recent "retooling" of the paper...my daily morning paper doesn't get delivered until 7-7:30AM on weekdays, and even as late as 9-9:30AM on weekends.
And we have the same delivery guy who tells us (now I see the guy all the time but never used to when he came earlier) that the issues are produced and available so much later than before so it's not his fault.
